Sgt. Thomas Z. Spitzer Memorial Fund

Sgt. Thomas Z. Spitzer, 23, of New Braunfels, TX, served as a mortarman with 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment. Thomas died June 25, 2014 in combat in Helmand province. He was serving his second tour in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Thomas, who enlisted on August 17, 2009, was a veteran of the Sangin Valley campaign in Helmand province. The first Marine battalions deployed there in 2010. The last Marines withdrew from Sangin in May, leaving Afghan troops in charge.

His personal and service awards include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan.

Thomas and his fiance, Casey Neef, were planning an April 18, 2015 wedding. 

Thomas was a 2009 grauate of Canyon High School. His mother, Jean Spitzer works for the Comal Independent School District.

Friends of Thomas and his family would be gracious for donations made in his honor to help create a Sgt. Thomas Z. Spitzer Memorial to include a bench and tree at Canyon High School. Additionally, funds will go toward charities of the Spitzer Family's choice.  

A Memorial will be held at 7:00 pm, Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at the Canyon High School football field. T-shirts and wristbands will be sold with all proceeds donated toward the Memorial fund.
