The Kids Kingdom

Let me start by first thanking you for your time and interest in helping us build a strong foundation for El Reino De Los Niños, or The Kids Kingdom Orphanage in Baja California, Mexico.

What is Reino De Los Niños?
The Kids Kingdom – located outside of Ensenada in Maneadero, Mexico – is a 25 year old organization dedicated to meeting the physical, emotional, relational, education, and spiritual needs of over 40 children. Since the founders Tomas and Maricela Shockey started the home, they have helped nearly a thousand  abandoned, neglected and abused children create positive, fulfilling and hopeful lives in a safe, stable and caring environment.

The Kids Kingdom serves all ranges of children: from newborn infants to those starting college. Each child has a unique story -- some are found wandering the streets alone and terrified; some are dropped off by the local police for their own protection; many were removed from their homes due to abuse.

Elizabeth's Story
A common story is about one similar to  Elizabeth.  Elizabeth and her six siblings were first abandoned by their father, followed shortly by her mother. Her older brother Eleazar - just a young teen himself -  became the “man” of the house, supporting and caring for his siblings as best he could. They lived in extreme poverty, with no running water, heat, toilets or kitchen.

In September 2009, a compassionate adult brought Elizabeth and her siblings to The Kids Kingdom. Since then, she and her brother and sister have thrived in the safe and loving home provided by Tomas and Maricela. Today, Elizabeth is a healthy and outgoing young woman who is doing well in school.  Hers  is an outstanding story of the power of the human spirit to overcome great hardship with loving, and positive support systems.

These children with nothing regularly find room in their hearts to help those less fortunate than themselves.  Elizabeth and other children regularly serve disabled children when volunteering at a home for special needs children in Ensenada, Mexico.

The love, patience, and compassion the children and young adults show these special needs children is a testament to the incredible work being done at The Kids Kingdom in restoring hope and imparting values to these once abandoned children.

Our Goal
We wish to establish a fund of $200,000.00 that serve as an emergency fund for operational needs.

Financially, The Kids Kingdom supports 40 children on about $150,000.00 a year. The children are solely dependent on donations. In other words, each child is clothed, fed, educated, and provided basic medical treatment on less than $3,750 per year.  That means that each child gets fed on $1.00 a day.

All other expenses -- from the salaries for the small full time staff, education (not free in Mexico), medical expenses, building maintenance, utilities, automobile and insurances expenses as well as a host of other costs -- are carried out of this budget. Currently, the orphanage runs a $3,500 dollar a month deficit and struggles each month to find the money for operating expenses. There is no reserve fund.

Where Will Your Money Go?
The funds will be used to build a small, one-bedroom apartment in the compound for caretakers -- a young married couple who is expecting their first child and can no longer live in the 10 by 10 room they live in – so that they may provide constant supervision and support to the children. The husband was a resident of the orphanage himself and is dedicated to caring for the following generations of children.  Next, the money will be put in a fund to ensure that the orphanage can make it through the hardest times.
