The money raised through GoFundMe will be used to repair and re-light the Colrain 911 American Flag Memorial located on Coombs Hill in Colrain, Massachusetts. The Colrain Memorial was built in November 2001 as a reminder of the terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington D.C., and Shanksville, PA, that took place on September 11, 2001.
The Memorial is a 16ft x 20ft painted American flag. It is located high on a hillside overlooking the Connecticut River Valley. When it was originally built, the flag was illuminated at night with glowing neon lighting that was visible for miles.
The neon lighting failed about ten years ago, and the support structure needs some maintenance. Trees and undergrowth have started to hide the view of the flag from the valley.
2026 will mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Our goal is to have the Memorial repaired and re-lit by that date to remember the lives that were lost and to commemorate the spirit of unity and common purpose that inspired the Memorial’s construction.
The money raised will be used to accomplish that goal. Thank you for contributing to our effort to save this beloved landmark.
Update, Memorial Day (5/25/2026): With donations received so far, we have rebuilt the support structure and flooring behind the Flag, and have begun clearing 12 years growth of wild brush from the field in front. The electrical system has been checked out and service resumed.
Update, August 15, 2026: The broken neon tubes have been taken down and new ones are on order. Delivery is expected next week. In meantime, the brush clearing continues, yard by yard. On Thursday 8/13, Daniels Land Management arrived and and cleared a huge chunk of brush. Now the Flag is clearly visible from northbound on Greenfield Road. Many thanks!
While we've made good progress, there is still much to be done.
The Flag face needs re-painting and there is more brush to be cleared.
To those who have donated already - our thanks and gratitude. To those who are considering - please give now so that Glowing Glory will be ready to glow again on September 11, 2026!
