Support The BTMR Project

Centering Black Stories. Uplifting Black Art. Rooted in Memory, Music, and Identity.

From the Heart — An Update from The BTMR Project

Thank you for being part of this journey. Because of your support, encouragement, and belief in our work, The BTMR Project has already achieved some incredible milestones—taking bold, creative works like Black to My Roots and Hair’s Breath across cities, across generations, and across continents.

We originally launched this page to raise funds for our performance at the 2025 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. And while that opportunity remains a huge part of our story, we’re expanding our vision—and this space—to reflect who we are and where we’re going next.

Going forward, this GoFundMe will serve as a central home for fundraising efforts supporting all projects under The BTMR Project umbrella. That includes future performances, residencies, community workshops, original music and theater works, and educational offerings that center Black voices, Black memory, and Black art.

What Is The BTMR Project?

The BTMR Project is a collective of artists, storytellers, musicians, educators, and cultural workers committed to uplifting stories from the African diaspora—particularly those rooted in the lived experiences of Black women and intergenerational community.

From award-winning theater to genre-defying music and movement-based storytelling, our work is grounded in the belief that Black stories matter, that Black art heals, and that creative truth-telling is a powerful form of resistance and restoration.

Our flagship works include:

BLACK TO MY ROOTS: African American Tales from the Head and the Heart

A dynamic, intergenerational theatrical work that explores the richness of Black identity through the voices of youth and elders. Now in its 25th year, Black to My Roots continues to evolve as a living archive of history, culture, and community healing.

HAIR’S BREATH: Music Inspired by Black Women and Their Hair

A music-based performance piece created by Seattle artists Adra Boo and Blake Madden, Hair’s Breath honors the beauty, politics, and sacredness of Black hair through original songs, personal stories, and a deeply emotional live experience.

Why We Need Ongoing Support

Art is powerful—but it also requires real, tangible resources. Your continued support allows us to:

Pay our artists fairly for their labor and time

Fund travel, housing, and production costs for future performances

Host community workshops and intergenerational storytelling gatherings

Commission new works rooted in Black history, music, and memory

Invest in marketing, outreach, and accessibility efforts to widen our reach

Sustain this work year-round—not just for one festival, but for many stages

Every donation, no matter the amount, helps keep this work alive and thriving.

Why This Work Matters

The BTMR Project exists because our stories are too often left out, erased, or simplified. We exist to reclaim narrative space—to honor the fullness of Black lives, and to do it through art that is bold, emotional, and deeply rooted in truth.

Whether we're performing for global audiences or facilitating workshops in our own neighborhoods, we are committed to telling stories that challenge, affirm, and connect. Stories that say: We are here. We’ve always been here. And our voices matter.
