The Mystery Of Molly Malone - Documentary

Hi, we are a team of film students on a quest to make a documentary to reaffirm the memory of Dublin's legendary fishmonger, Molly Malone. We have assembled a team of experts to investigate her background and try to solve the mystery of her existence once and for all.
Premise Molly Malone is one of the most iconic figures in Irish folklore. Celebrated in the renowned folk song "Cockles and Mussels" she has become the anthem of Dublin itself and her image is immortalised in the statue on Grafton Street.
Her life remains one of the city's greatest mysteries because no solid record has emerged that proves her definitive existence, but regardless, nearly every Irish person—and countless visitors— recognizes her, and she is considered a beloved part of Irish heritage.
And yet, her statue is one of the only statues in Dublin that has no plaque. It has also become subject to a new "tradition": rubbing her bosom for luck, allowing for her cultural status to be reduced to a mere symbol of sex.
In a lighthearted true-crime style fashion, this documentary investigates Molly Malone’s historical background and cultural importance with the few records that have emerged about her in the past. With the help of experts from different fields, it tries to piece together Molly’s character, explore the various theories of who she could have been had she been real, and discover why she has become such an important figure in Irish culture, in order to reaffirm her status.
The film re-examines how we, as a society, value and preserve our cultural traditions, and it offers a heartfelt reflection on women's history, folklore, tradition and legacy, prompting viewers to confront a universal question: How do we want to be remembered?

Director's Statement
Michelle Sorriso is a passionate filmmaker with a keen interest in exploring how gender affects society. She is driven by social change and empowering young adults whose voices need amplifying. For this documentary, she has gathered a team of incredible women, from musician activist TILLY CRIPWELL to historian JULIE PEAKMAN, to discuss the origins and stories of Molly Malone.
She's passionate about this project, as it doesn't just tackle a misogynistic issue, but also paints a picture of what the relationship between people and their culture looks like today. In a time where the future looks so uncertain, we need something to remind ourselves of who we are and where we came from.
