Blankets for Bodhgaya

UNICORN PROJECT CHARITABLE SOCIETY
Our school has now been open for almost six years. During that time, we haven't stood still, making great progress in delivering some education to the poverty stricken children around Bodhgaya, Bihar, India. In June we unfortunately ran out of money and had to lay off our teachers because we could not pay their wages of $100 per month. My associates in Bodhgaya have done their best to teach the 30-50 children but are stretched so thin with trying to balance their family financial commitments with the need of the school children. I visited in October and November this year and witnessed and could understand the absolute poverty of many families. Unfortunately now, many of our students are the beggars on the streets of Bodhgaya, begging for food or the odd rupee.

A good friend, who is a physician in the area (who does an incredible amount of free care) has personally reached out to me saying that the children and many adults are living in conditions with no heat and no food. The winter time temps get down to 5C at night, and most of these villagers live in small mud huts or makeshift tents in the fields. I don’t want to get into the moral issues of the super rich and the super poor, in India as every country has this issue. The good doctor has requested that I run this campaign to purchase wool blankets and food baskets for the Dalit people in this area.
(The Dalit, commonly known as the 'untouchables' in India and other South Asian countries, are born into a lifetime of marginalisation, exclusion and human rights violations. They are strictly 'ranked' – based on their descent – and are thereby placed at the lowest echelon of society's classes.)

Currently The Unicorn Project Society has about $250. I will be sending $200 from the bank account and topping it off with whatever else that I can raise (now currently at $800 total). Any $$ that are donated will go first of all for warm blankets and food hampers for these marginalized persons. This care is more important than the school at this time. Hopefully your kindness will then allow for enough $$ to re-open the school in the New Year.
Please contribute what you can, knowing that 110% of your contribution goes to the school and its projects...

October 2023

Just look at what we have done in the past 6 years.

  • A new brick two-room schoolhouse.

  • Boys' and girls' washrooms with showers.
  • A proper septic system.
  • A water purification unit to purify the water.

  • An electric pump for the well.
  • Electrical hookup to the local power grid.

  • Started a "Women's Empowerment Learning Centre."

  • Purchased three treadle sewing machines and monthly sewing supplies.

  • Hire four teachers to teach the children and teach sewing trades to the women.
  • Create a compassionate place for the whole community to enjoy and feel safe and worthy.
  • Donated over 1000 woolen blankets to the farm workers, women and children.

  • Our team in Bodhgaya handed out over 500 bags of food, each enough to last a family of 4 for two weeks.

  • Purchased student and school supplies to provide a proper curriculum.
  • New shoes for the students

This is just the start of what is possible...We are running on a shoestring budget...Any donation that you can send us will be used for the school. The trip to raise money is MY EXPENSE, not the societies.
