Background:
Philip Als - a Barbadian rowing legend
In 2003, Philip Als rowed into the history books and the Guinness Book of Records by becoming one of the first Barbadian ocean rowers to successfully cross the Atlantic in the 2003 Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Challenge.
Along with fellow rower Randal Valdez, the Barbadian rowing duo “Team Rowing Home”, undertook the 3,000 nautical mile row across the Atlantic, starting in La Gomera in the Canary Islands.
Leading the race at one point, they battled the elements of the sun, gale-force winds, high seas, and sharks. After 43 days, 14 hours and 17 minutes on the ocean, the team rowed into Port St. Charles, Barbados on 01 December 2003 to a rapturous reception from proud Barbadians who had followed their epic journey. Als and Valdez placed third (3rd ) in the race out of sixteen (16) teams.
What is next?
In 2022, he plans to be part of an expedition team to row the infamous 2,000 miles of the Arctic North West Passage (NWP) starting at Pond Inlet (Nunavut) on Baffin Bay (North East Canada) and finishing at Kaktovik (North east Alaska) on the Arctic Ocean.
This will be the first time in history that any crew in the world has attempted to row the passage since it was discovered in 1850. This is the ultimate rowing challenge and the last great Expedition on Earth. The NWP expedition will be led by Leven Brown, highly regarded as the greatest ocean rower and skipper of the 21st Century with five Guinness World Records to his credit.
Philip’s legacy from this ocean row is not just one of a sporting feat but to inspire people to live local and think globally about their carbon footprint, and how they can contribute to lessening negative environmental impacts . This is more important than ever with Arctic waters warming at faster levels than previously recorded.
The expedition will be followed by a film crew and international media - print and broadcast, who will document the journey. They anticipate that media coverage value will be in the region of £5 million - £10 million. This will be further extended with the making of a documentary from their filming of the climate in the Artic, by the hugely popular ‘Blue Planet’ production team.
Please help and support Philip in this exciting once in a lifetime journey!
