THE DESERE THORNTON FOUNDATION
Taking a stand against violence in our community.
The Desere Thornton Endowed Scholarship at the UT College of Social Work was established in memory of our classmate and friend Desere. She and her two sons were tragically murdered in their home in October 2009. Through this scholarship, we hope to empower community-minded people like Desere to reach their goal of obtaining a Masters of Social Work in order to improve the lives of those around them.
Desere Thornton was a 38 year old mother of two beautiful boys, 9 yr old Anthony and 16 yr old Jarrod. Desere lovingly raised her two sons while also running her self-employed fitness center, Victory, in Pulaski, TN. Meanwhile, juggling a family and her own business, Desere was a full time student working on a Master's of Social Work.
Desere "˜s mission was to reach out to neglected and abused children in her
community who were searching for positive environments they lacked at home.
Desere's journey was tragically ended on October 23, 2009. Desere, her two young sons and the family dog were tortured, brutally murdered and burned in their own home. This unspeakable crime ended Desere's goals of achieving her Master's and helping children in need.
The Desere Thornton Endowed Scholarship serves to honor Desere and allows her mission to live on. This memorial fund will award a full scholarship to a deserving student that displays honor, dignity, and compassion while striving to carry out Desere's mission.
Please help us increase violence awareness throughout Middle Tennessee and honor the Thornton family through this memorial. All donations will be made to The Desere Thornton Foundation and are tax refundable.
Thank you so much for contributing to this family's legacy and taking a stand again violence in our community.
