Tanna Cyclone Relief

Donation protected
Cyclone Pam devastated Vanuatu in March 2015. Of all the islands, Tanna was one of the worst hit. Tanna has been receiving international aid from first response units with basic food, water and health supplies, but this aid will end in June when the state of emergency is lifted. On Tanna, basic infrastructure is still not recovered. Many villages are still without houses, with families sharing two or three houses between a whole village. Now the people of Tanna need support to make themselves resilient again.

We want to raise some money to help locals rebuild the island as they see fit.

Priorities are:

Tafea Kaljoral Senta (TKS): The centre for island administration and cultural life on Tanna, the TKS building was badly damaged in the cyclone, along with the Council of Chiefs building. These facilities are necessary for the people of Tanna to organise the rest of the island’s recovery. Local experts have designed a new TKS building based on a traditional cyclone shelter design, which has been in use on the island for more than 4 000 years, to replace the previous square concrete structure.

Village resources: There are many remote villages on Tanna, and most lost the majority of their housing to the cyclone. Villagers are sharing the few remaining houses. We asked the chiefs of a few villages how we could help them to rebuild. While they will continue to build village houses from traditional materials (wood and grass), they would like money to fund a central community house and cyclone shelter, to serve several villages. Equipped with a drinking water tank and solar powered light, such a structure would help them to administer the villages’ recovery and to have a central shelter for future emergencies.

This fundraising effort is being administered from the UK in close consultation with representatives of the Tafea Kaljoral Senta and Tanna village chiefs. Money goes directly to the Tanna Kaljoral Senta bank account and to the village representatives.
