Bowling. What comes to mind when you hear the word? It's probably not opportunity. And, if it's not, you're probably not a follower of youth bowling. It's HUGE!
The Taylorville Bowling Foundation was created in 2012 to provide the needed funding to revive the Taylorville High School Boys Bowling program. In 2011, the Taylorville School Board voted to eliminate the program as well as many others in order to help with the budget problems Illinois schools were facing. While successful in creating a balanced budget, this decision potentially deprived our current and future boys bowlers hundreds of thousands of dollars. We had to do something!
You might be suprised to hear that youth bowling and specifically collegiate bowling is growing. Nearly a decade of constant growth has increased the number of colleges with bowling programs to over 240, well above the more than 160 schools fielding teams 10 years ago. During the same period, the total number of competitors has nearly doubled to more than 3,400.
You might ask, "How likely is a high school bowler to get a college scholarship?" Well, we've had a REALLY good track record with both Boys and Girls bowling. In the history of THS Bowling, over 10 bowlers have bowled in college with an estimated $320,000 in college scholarships awarded to them.
As you can see, with just a few thousand dollars a year, we can give opportunities to kids who might not be college bound or might not fit the normal path to college.
Please donate generously and you might just be helping a high school student become a college bowler.
