To All Supporters of Women’s Athletics:
One year ago today, Athletic Director Gary Barta unjustly fired Tracey Griesbaum, an outstanding coach, leader and mentor, from her position as head field hockey coach at the University of Iowa. Today, Tracey needs your help again. I am asking you to consider making a donation toward the important fight undertaken by Tracey.
We are trying to raise $75,000 by December 31, 2015 to level the playing field in this important legal battle for women’s athletics. Gary Barta’s actions have effectively destroyed Tracey’s ability to coach at another institution. To date, Tracey has refused any financial assistance in the hope that the University of Iowa would choose to conduct an investigation into the demonstrated pattern of gender bias under his leadership. The University of Iowa has repeatedly refused to do so, until finally, a legal battle now begins. In order to continue the overall effort in challenging these illegal actions and engage the necessary legal experts, we need more than Tracey can afford. At the urging of numerous people, Tracey has finally agreed to set up a legal assistance fund for donations.
Tracey is undertaking this fight to ensure that what has happened to her, her staff, and her student-athletes does not happen to anyone else, in any sport. This is a fight of national importance in the long, ongoing battle for equity for female coaches and student-athletes. The outcome has significant implications nationally and is being closely watched across the country by all those involved in athletics. Please help send the clear message that female coaches and student-athletes will no longer tolerate gender bias or quietly go away. EVERY donation, no matter how large or small, will help.
For those of you who have had the honor to know or work with Tracey personally, you know what a strong, selfless and independent person she is. You know that this is the last thing that Tracey would want any of us doing. However, as a leader, Tracey knows that this fight is bigger than just her. She is determined to stand up for this cause and help organizations and individuals bring the real story of gender bias to light.
On behalf of Tracey fighting this battle to continue the past progress made under Title IX, and create the future we all would like to see, thank you for consideration of this request.
