Kayla went in to have her gallbladder removed on May 17 due to debilitating pain from gallstones. She had complications and needed to have a 2nd surgery to remove a stone lodged in her liver. Doctors explained a possible complication after this procedure could be acute pancreatitis. Sure enough, Kayla was discharged home only to return hours later to the ER in excruciating pain. They immediately attempted to control her pain and discovered she had acute pancreatitis. She was admitted. Doctors started treatment and Kayla continued getting worse. Her labs were not trending in the right direction and her kidneys were failing. Due to her pain and acute kidney failure, doctors decide to transfer her to ICU. She now had one of the most severe cases of acute pancreatitis her doctor has seen. Dialysis was needed. Her body was not tolerating the dialysis and her blood volume was low causing her to need several blood and platelet transfusion. Dialysis was on hold as she was not tolerating in. Also, her body started to retain fluid. Her situation became critical very quickly. As she started to struggle to breathe and continues to need transfusion, her medical team decided she needed to be intubated (put a breathing tube in) and flown to a larger facility with a level 3 surgical ICU.
She was flown Saturday, May 25 by helicopter to a level 3 ICU (the highest level and offers a full spectrum of life support technologies and monitoring). They discovered a splenic hematoma with more imaging and decided to take her into emergent surgery in the early morning hours of Sunday May 26. Her family and friends waited and prayed! Kayla came through the surgery well, remained stable, and the source of bleeding (her spleen) was removed. We thought we were finally moving in the right direction as she was extubated (came off the breathing tube) and was placed on a bipap machine. That did not turn out to be the case. Kayla was tolerating the continuous dialysis but she continued to need blood transfusions and her lungs continued to fill with fluid leading to respiratory failure. So much was going on at once. We struggled to understand why this was happening to such a young vibrant woman. Her medical team decided the best way to help her body heal was to intubate her again, sedate her completely and start a paralytic medication so they could place her prone (lay her on her belly). This position would help the heart and abdominal organs compress the lungs less, which improves lung function and gas exchange. This can increase oxygen levels that are too low due to severe respiratory illness. This currently where we are at and Kayla continues to be critically ill. Kayla has a wife, Amber, and 3 children (12, 2, and 11 mos) at home that love her dearly. Her kids want their momma home! They have a busy farm with horses, dogs, goats, ducks, chickens, and rabbits. She loves all her animals and her children. Kayla is so loved and needed! We have faith that Kayla will be healed and made whole again! In the meantime, the medical bills are adding up and her family needs support. Life goes on while Kayla fights! Please keep Kayla and her family in your prayers. If you can help support her family through this difficult time, please do! We appreciate all the love, support and prayers! Keep them coming!! Thank you in advance for anything you can give
