Tibetan Community in Britain (TCB) Tree-Planting Project: In Gratitude and Dedication to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s Long Life

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama has been a great advocate for sustainability and protection of the global environment. His Holiness has stated “Taking care of our planet should be part of our daily lives. We need to work together to meet the climate challenge that affects us all.” One of the ways we can fulfil His Holiness advice is to plant trees.

The TCB Board Members (2020-2022) has initiated Tree-Planting Project in honour of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s commitment to the global environment. The project is also aimed to pay gratitude to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s tireless dedication for the freedom and welfare of Tibetan people. The 113 tree-planting over two different sites will represent the His Holiness reaffirmation to live over 113 years. The project is also auspiciously coincided with the year of Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebration.

We are very fortunate to have tree-planting advice from Rowena Field (Tibet Support Group York). Rowena is a UK coordinator for The Global Tree Initiative. This is an international project to facilitate tree planting around the world, all the trees are being dedicated to the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. As a result of Rowena’s involvement, we received an opportunity to plant 113 trees at Harewood Estate in West Yorkshire, England with the installation of plaque dedicated to His Holiness.

Harewood House is a beautiful 18th century country house with an extensive garden of 850 acres forest. The House is one of the ten treasure houses of England and Arts of Council England accredited Museum. David Lascelles is the 8th Earl of Harewood. His estate is no stranger to Tibetan Buddhism. Tashi Lhunpo monks have performed on the grounds of Harewood. In 2004, monks from Bhutan built a Stupa of Enlightenment in his Himalayan Garden. He has a great respect for His Holiness and has kindly agreed for the tree-planting project on his estate. Each tree will cost £50 and there will be a separate cost for the plaque installation.

With support from charity called Treesponsibility, we received the opportunity to plant trees at Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire a land owned by Kate and Peter Ambrose who were very touched by meeting His Holiness the Dalai Lama when he visited Leeds a few years ago. The fund for the trees, stakes and guards will be claimed under the government grant with the help from Treesponsibility. However, it would be highly appreciated if we could offer a donation to Treesponsibility and the fund is needed for the plaque installation.

In short, TCB has secured two beautiful sites of which we can plant 113 trees on each location. With your financial support and our combined community spirit, our small action can make a big impact in protecting and preserving nature. So, let’s come together to turn His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s vision into a reality. Let us work together to create a greener, kinder and more harmonious planet for today and for generations to come.
