Some years ago, my beautiful mother was diagnosed with what doctors & experts called "The Cruel Mystery", also known as Lupus. Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or organs inside the body). Chronic means that the signs and symptoms tend to last longer than six weeks and often for many years. Being an inflammatory disease, it causes the body to attack it's own tissues & immune system, thereby making it incurable.
My mother has always shown such strength & grace despite her battle with this terrible disease and has never allowed it to stop her from helping those less fortunate than her. She found ways to be an outstanding mother, an outstanding provider & an outstanding person for my brothers, sister, & I, even while living in the most difficult neighborhoods in the most difficult financial situations.
Raising us in Brooklyn, NY & then moving to one of the lower income towns on Long Island, it was always a challenge for my parents to provide the financial situation our family needed while also providing the guidance necessary for us to succeed in the world. Working hard enough to provide for a family of 6, while climbing a mountain of medical bills & also guiding children in the right direction is difficult for any family, let alone a family raising children in a lower income community. That guidance is crucial to the growth & development of happy, positive, productive children and it's because of that idea that I knew something needed to be done in order to help future families in my position.
Based on the strength of my beautiful mother & all of the experiences I had in my life growing up on the underprivileged, lower income side of the spectrum, I made a decision to do something about it. I decided to start a nonprofit organization in her name that would give back to inner city & lower income youth that have & will experience the same struggles I experienced as a child & still experience to this day.
The Sylvia K. Foundation is a community resource that provides underprivileged youth with opportunities that may have eluded them otherwise. With everything from day camps and child services for the younger children, to help with scholarship opportunities & early financial advice for teens, we look to offer a wide array of services & programs to help our community & hopefully in time communities throughout the country. Through programs such as the B.O.K. Together or Bring Our Kids Together program, we can come together in a safe & enjoyable environment for the children, while as a community addressing and solving the issues that impact the families that don't have the means to offer support & guidance to their children.
My vision for the future is a broad one, but watching my mother battle her disease while raising her children to be adjusted to the world & giving everything she had in the process has inspired me to do the same. I would like to make it possible for families like mine to succeed & have their children enjoy their childhood without having to grow too quickly due to the strains of their surroundings.
It will be a big undertaking, but I know that with your help & the help of the community, The Sylvia K. Foundation will provide a bright future for our children & an even brighter future for our communities. Our goal is $10,000 & with that investment I know that the programs and events that we have planned will become possible! Thank you all so much for believing in me & thank you mom for showing me that you make your own fortune in this world, regardless of where you come from.
