Short and Sweet: Sweet Addiction is finally making the transition from food truck to brick and mortar! We are raising funds to finish paying for construction costs and permits to open the bakery.
The Sweet Long Story: Sweet Addiction is the dream child of self taugh baker, Paloma Trejo. It all started when she realized her heart was no longer in teaching and more and more found herself daydreaming of making sweet treats and opening a bakery. In 2011 the stars aligned (she cashed in her retirement fund), and Sweet Addiction was born out of her home kitchen as a cupcake delivery service. She found a dingy old 1974 Chevy Step Van on Craigslist and instantly fell in love with its potential.
The Sweet Truck rolled into the El Paso food scene in October of 2012 at the beginning of the food truck boom. As the first dessert truck in the city it was also the first female owned and operated food truck, a true trailblazer. Then tragedy struck, in July 2013 at around midnight, Paloma and the truck, were struck by a drunk driver who ran a red light and left them stranded in the middle of an intersection. The truck was left in severe disrepair and the community rallied to help save the Sweet Truck after it was entered in a national food truck contests. El Pasoans helped us raise over $2,000 needed to salvage the truck.
Year after year, parking lot after parking lot, festival after festival, the truck's popularity increased. Customers started asking where the bakery was, they no longer wanted to chase after the Sweet Truck, they needed a permanent location to get their fix. Once again, it was time for Paloma to take a leap. In June of 2016, she found a dingy old building in the heart of Central El Paso and instantly fell in love with its potential.
Sweet Dreams: It is our goal to create an inviting space for the community to enjoy BIG slice of cake! We will finally be able to expand our menu and offer a wide variety of comfort treats - and yes, cupcakes! We will also be able to host parties, classes, art markets, and much more. Sweet Addiction will be collaborating with other smaller businesses to bring you special treats. Our hope is to become a hub for creativity, entrepreurship, charity, and all things local.
The Current Sitch: The bakery space is leased, most of the major equiptment has been purchased, and our building permits are ready to be issued. We left our commercial kitchen on Pellicano in December because we could no longer afford to pay two leases. Due to many hiccups along the way, we are currently extremely behind schedule, and over budget. We need to raise $5,000 to help cover the construction costs to include 4 walls to divide the kitchen and seating area, a new electrical panel and wiring of the new walls, as well as plumbing for the sinks that need to be installed, and to help pay for city permits for both the bakery and the food truck.
Thank You! To all who have crossed our path and have in any way helped shape and support our business we are eternally grateful! During our fundraising campaign we will be having several pop ups around town as well as special deliveries on Fridays. We have set up special treats for you to enjoy as a way of saying thank you for your kind contributions. Have a wonderful day!
