Dr Aruna Malik: A fundraiser for his family
Donation protected
Dr. Aruna Kumar Malik was an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Gujarat National Law University. He was a thoughtful and committed teacher, highly regarded by his students for his accessibility and humbleness. His field of study was international relations and public policy and he had a growing interest in sustainability and environmental justice. In 2018, he received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee International Scholarship and was a visiting scholar for a year at the University of Winnipeg and the Canadian Mennonite University. Dr. Malik was instrumental in creating opportunities for UWinnipeg and Menno Simons College students to do their thesis and practicum research in India on environmental justice topics. He embraced life in Winnipeg and with his open mindedness, sense of adventure and easy laugh Aruna made many friends while he was in Canada. He passed away at the young age of 40 on April 28, 2021 at the Civil Hospital in Gandhinagar due to complications arising from coronavirus.
Aruna was the sole breadwinner for his wife Sujata and their two young sons, aged 7 and 4. Friends and family are rallying around them but they face trying emotional and financial times in the immediate future and over the long term. There is little that friends and colleagues in Canada can do to provide emotional support but we can chip in to help the family deal with their financial challenges. Every small donation can help the family with their everyday living expenses so that they do not face financial concerns on top of the grief they are currently experiencing. Donations will help Sujata Mallik set aside money for the future. We are especially interested in helping her create a savings account for her sons' education.
This fundraiser was started by friends and colleagues in Canada who had the good fortune of working with Dr. Malik. Aruna was a generous collaborator with a keen intellect and an unwavering commitment to social and environmental justice. But, perhaps most importantly, he was a gentle soul, a good friend and a loving husband and father. We urge you to support Aruna’s family in these difficult times. All donations will go into a bank account held by Mrs. Sujata Mallik. Please share this link widely.
Thank you very much for your kindness and support.
