"I believe in me."
These 4 simple words have a whole new meaning when spoken from a child with a learning disability.
Oftentimes stuggles with learning differently can strip even the most precocious child of their confidence. The National American Miss pageant is not a beauty contest (e.g. no makeup is allowed). In fact, the majority of the scoring is based on communication skills. Participants have an opportunity to engage, interact, and build friendships with other children. They learn how to gain poise, self-confidence, and the valuable communication skills needed to succeed in life.
When asked why she wants to compete this year, she said, "I want to be a National Cover Girl, because I want to be a role model to kids that are just like me. My brain works differently, and sometimes things like math are really hard for me. I want to show kids...don't focus on the hard things, but focus on the things you can do."
In 2014, Nyiah was a Top 15 State Finalist in the Princess division. On July 18, 2015 she was crowned the new 2015 National American Miss California Jr. Pre-Teen Cover Girl.
Now she will be representing California at Nationals over Thanksgiving Week. To do this, she will need to do well in the competition, as well as gain the support (financial) of friends, family, and members of the community.
HERE'S HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT NYIAH
Make a contribution of any amount ($5, 10, $25, etc) and/or write her an encouraging note. All supporters (and business names) will be included in the pageant program.
Also, feel free to ask her a question. This will help prepare her for the competition.
Deadline: September 27th
Thank you for your support!
