Hi. My name is Karen Thompson. I was a cardiac nurse at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. I was, that is, until I didn't wake up one morning and my son found me with a glucose level of 18. You see, I was nonresponsive and he called 911. In the process of trying to revive me and raise my blood sugar, I began having seizures. To control the seizures I had to be put into a drug induced coma. I was on a ventilator and unconscious for many days. Now it has been weeks, I'm off the ventilator, beginning to eat liquids and soft foods (I also have a feeding tube). I'm alert more and beginning to form sentences again.
Update*** 6/20/18
I'm doing much better and will be transferred to an Acute Rehab Center tomorrow. Everyone's support is wonderful and is really appreciated. My family has figured out how I can keep my insurance and everyone's donations will make it all the more manageable.
I'll keep you posted as I continue my long recovery process.
Thank you, Karen Thompson, RN
