It is with a heavy heart I write the following words about our amazing dad, a wonderful husband to my mom, a dedicated friend and incredible man. It is very surreal to write this about my dad who fought as hard as he could, but took his last breath on Sunday, July 3.
My dad was a great man- full of life and joy. He used to know almost every fact about Philly sports and loved most sports in general, loved dancing (he was always the first person on the dance floor at Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and weddings), the beach (and horseshoes of course), biking on the boardwalk and food (we called him the "vacuum"). He loved meeting new people and creating friendships, and most of all he loved his family. He truly loved to serve the Lord and he did that faithfully in his job working in ministry with my mom.
His world, our world, changed drastically in May 2015. My dad was diagnosed with a stage 4 glioblastoma brain tumor- the worst kind. My dad was so brave and reassured us girls that he would be Ok and he had the best doctors. My mom and dad acted fast and my dad had surgery just over a week after the diagnosis. Following his surgery, he had many different types of therapy (physical, speech, cognitive, etc.), radiation, chemotherapy and a new vaccine (under UPenn clinical trial). Although every day was a tremendous struggle for him from extreme tiredness, short-term memory loss, aphasia and more, he remained strong and continuously prayed for healing. And sure enough, following the surgery and aggressive therapy he began to show signs of recovery and the doctor reported no tumor growth!
Fast forward to the end of January 2016, something wasn't right and the tumor was back. The doctors didn't have any great solutions and shortly after his ability to function independently declined. Recently, my parents made the incredibly difficult decision to move towards palliative care. My family is in shock and in tremendous grief; there is just no way to prepare for a goodbye like this, but we know God will strengthen us even as each step forward feels like a challenge.
My family has been blessed by our family, community, Congregation Beth Yeshua (CBY), and many others outside of CBY. They have been supporting us in so many ways – providing weekly family dinners so my family could enjoy a relaxing time together while also supporting us emotionally, spiritually and financially. We will never forget that and we are extremely thankful for your support.
As we prepare for he next steps in life, we ask you to consider offering any support you can. Our goal is to raise $20,000 in the next 90 days to help cover the funeral costs and other expenses my mom, Hope, will face in the upcoming months especially since my daddy was the main provider.
I ask that you keep my family in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time in our lives.
THANK YOU!!!
