This is a place where you can help Colleen and her family get through the recovery process from an awful car accident that almost took our lovely Muffin from us. But she’s still here and wants vegan popsicles, and we are so so so glad about that, oh. mygawd.
This past weekend while visiting the Grand Canyon, Colleen was in a serious automobile collision that crushed her pelvis and hand, and fractured her femur, lumbar vertebrae, multiple ribs, and caused life-threatening internal bleeding. Colleen doesn’t remember much from the accident—the Jaws of Life were used to rescue her from her crushed truck, and then she was airlifted to the nearest Level 1 Trauma center, which was in Flagstaff, AZ. She has been in the ICU since, and has undergone back to back surgeries for the past few days. We don't have too many details about the accident (as one of Colleen’s besties I can say that she’s a very safe driver who, also as a self-taught motorcycle mechanic, is very dedicated to the condition of her vehicles), however, authorities say that Colleen's actions did not cause the accident.
After an epic round of surgeries to address internal bleeding and organ damage, and to repair her broken femur and pelvis, Colleen is hoping to be moved to a regular room in a few days. Right now, the prognosis is that she will not be able to walk for 3 months. After her hospital stay, she will continue the rehab process.
Wait, why Flagstaff?! Well, it has to do with the tenacity and ambition of this lovable character. Colleen was in the middle of a two-week road trip across the inter mountain west—in her beloved Bronco II—that she’d been meticulously planning and saving up for for months. The day before her accident, she’d been hiking the Grand Canyon Rim trail and enthusiastically planning the next day’s hike. Colleen often juggles several jobs at once to pay Portland rent and also carve out time for her passions, hiking and motorcycles! Colleen also loves David Bowie, cats, art, flowers, and is one of the best friends a person could ever wish for.
Who am I? (For transparency) I'm "So" a.k.a Sophia Sinopoulos-Lloyd, and I'm honored to call Colleen one of my lifelong friends. We met in kindergarten in Vermont and our gym teacher used to confuse us with each other because we were both petite & unusually strong-for-our-size tomboyish kids with bowl cuts. (We still pretty much are that, except minus the bowl cuts!) Colleen has recently supported me through some pretty tough times. She is that friend who will pick you up from the airport, help you move stuff into a storage unit after a difficult move (and be REALLY practical and organized about it), take you hiking on her favorite trail when you're feeling like a turd, remind you to love and respect yourself, and many many other things. It's time to give back in a big, big way, for all of us who have been touched and supported by Colleen's friendship & love, her practical wisdom, her humor, her creativity, silliness, style, resourcefulness, and last but not least adorable-ness and beauty. I'm making this campaign in coordination and with guidance from Colleen's family, her boyfriend Jesse who is currently with her at the ICU, and a little squad of buddies who have known Colleen and me since we were weird little kids together.
Why this $ amount $ ?
This amount doesn't even account for the total emotional & physical impact of Colleen's injuries (especially projected into the farther future), but it's a start. As I write, the bill just for her ICU stay so far, surgeries, & Medevac/Flight for Life is $186,000. After moving from the ICU she will stay in a regular hospital room for at least another week, which carries many associated costs. Then add a few months of rehab to this, which is estimated to cost around $80,000.
There are still many unknowns as to how or if these medical bills will be helped by insurance companies. As those in the medical field may know, Medevac flights, which can run up to $40,000 in this part of the country, often are barely covered by any insurance. Right now we need a place for people who love Colleen to help from afar. This amount is, scarily, within normal for emergency medical care for this kind of trauma.
