Cindy's Fight Against Cancer

Persevere: verb
continue in a course of action even in the face of difficulty or when success in uncertain.

Cindy Laurila Wicklund (Cinny to friends and family), is a caring, fun loving, and all around amazing woman. She never lets anything get her down and she always tries to live life to the fullest.

Unfortunately, she has had much more than her fair share of medical issues, the most recent of which is a diagnosis of an aggressive form of lung cancer, known as Small Cell Carcinoma. She has two masses in her left lung that have been deemed inoperable due to her other past and present health concerns. It was caught early, but Cindy is having to undergo rigorous treatment in order to prevent the cancer from spreading.

We all know that Cindy will persevere and win this fight, but this is your opportunity to help show her that you are with her every step of the way. She needs to know how many people are in her corner.

The Backstory
To recap for those that may not know Cindy that well, it all started in the fall of 2012. That was when a brain aneurysm, located in her cerebellum, burst and caused her to collapse while she was caring for an elderly woman with Alzheimer's disease. She was airlifted to a hospital 100 miles away where an emergency surgery was performed to stop the bleeding in her brain. She had to stay in intensive care for over a month, but the surgery was a success. However, she had to return only a few months later and receive an emergency open head surgery when the aneurysm began bleeding again.

Then in 2015, Cindy was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatment off and on for months, before receiving a partial mastectomy. The doctors were successful in eradicating the cancer, but Cindy suffered irreparable lung damage from the treatment, resulting in interstitial lung disease. For over a year following that treatment, Cindy struggled with daily tasks (cooking, cleaning, going for a walk, etc.) without the aid of an oxygen tank. As if that weren't enough, Cindy also underwent lumbar spinal fusion over this past summer after suffering with severe lower back pain for years.

Just as things were starting to improve and Cindy was getting around on her own again and using the oxygen tank less and less, she was diagnosed with small cell carcinoma.

Yet Another Fight
Small cell carcinoma is no joke. If you Google it, one of the first words to come up is ‘aggressive.’ Cindy is lucky that this was caught early, but the treatment plan is going to have to be even more aggressive than the cancer. She has already undergone multiple rounds of radiation and chemotherapy. This is focused on not only the infected lung, but also the surrounding tissue and all the way up to her brain. The cancer has not spread yet, but the doctors are taking extra precaution.

Cindy and Dave will be travelling to Green Bay Wisconsin for treatment, which is about 100 miles from home (Iron Mountain, Michigan). They will be spending three weeks in Green Bay starting next week (9/25). After that they will be travelling back for three days of treatment every three weeks. There is not currently an end date for her treatment plan.

Expenses and Goal
Cindy and Dave will have to pay for lodging, gas, food, car maintenance (their car will need new tires within the treatment timeline), and they will need to pay for a dog-sitter and/or kennel. This will end up costing them thousands of dollars throughout cancer treatment and this does not even take into consideration medical bills. Cindy’s current insurance plan should cover the majority of the treatment, but it is unknown how much they will end up having to pay on their own. What IS known is that Cindy’s extensive medical history has led to tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid medical debt.

This is why we have set the ambitious goal of 5 thousand dollars for this campaign. All donations will immediately go to help Cindy and Dave pay for expenses related to travel for Cindy’s current cancer treatments. Any amount in addition to what is needed for immediate costs will be used to help lighten the burden of medical debt that has been following Cindy and Dave for several years. They deserve a break.

Why this means so much
Cindy Laurila Wicklund is the toughest and bravest woman I have ever met. She has gone through more in past several years than anyone should ever have to bear. She has survived not one, but TWO emergency brain surgeries. She has beat breast cancer. She has fought the effects of interstitial lung disease. She is still recovering from spinal fusion.

Now Cindy faces what might be the most challenging fight yet. Still, she continues to persevere and manages to bring joy into other's lives every single day as an amazing mother, wife, sister, daughter, and friend. She has always spent her time caring for and helping others, but she never asks for help, even when she needs it most. So this is our chance to return the favor. Please help us show Cindy that we are all here for her. Help her to beat the odds again. She deserves it and so much more.

Thank you for considering to support my mom's fight against cancer, it is truly appreciated. We are eternally grateful for donations of any amount.
