On December 3rd, 2014, my life changed forever. I was climbing with a friend, and as I rested on the rope, the anchor above me failed, and I fell 35 feet. When I woke up...I knew right away that I couldn't feel my legs.
My name is Josh Hancock. I am 33 years old, and I am paralyzed from the waist down.
The first year after my injury I moved out of my home of 5 years (too many stairs) into an apartment, and threw myself into rehab, physical therapy, occupational therapy, pain management, and just learning how to live again. At the end of the year I bought a van, converted it to be my temporary home, and hit the road to learn how to ski again.
Along the way I skied with many adaptive ski organizations from Oregon (OAS), to Idaho (Higher Grounds), Wyoming (Teton Adaptive Sports), Utah (Wasatch Adaptive), Colorado (Adaptive Sports Center, Steamboat STARS, and NSCD), and California (Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra, and Disabled Sports USA). They shared their equipment, knowledge, passion, and time to help me realize my dream of leaning to sit ski.
This year, I'm hoping to buy my own equipment, and also to raise money to support the organizations that helped me on my journey.
The total cost of the equipment I’m trying to buy is $15,000. So far I've been able to save up $5,000 for ski gear, and I received two grants towards the cost of my ski: $3,000 from they Kelly Brush Foundation, and $3,000 from GoHawkeye! For every dollar we raise with this campaign, one dollar will be donated to the adaptive organizations that helped me out so much last year.
Friends, I suffered a huge set back two years ago, but with your support, I will keep moving forward and enjoying every scratch of life thats still within my reach. Please join me in helping others do the same.
