Support for Ray's Journey to Recovery

In the face of adversity, Ray has shown the heart of a warrior. Each day, he bravely confronts the new challenges that have emerged since his stroke. On December 2nd, Ray’s world was altered in an instant when he experienced a central brain hemorrhage, leading to a traumatic brain injury.
After a week in the hospital, Ray was transferred to a rehabilitation facility. Although he could understand his surroundings, he lost his voice and the movement and sensation on his left side. We discovered he could no longer eat on his own. Everything he once knew had to be relearned, including overcoming dysphagia and dysarthria. It was there we spent our Christmas, realizing that bringing Ray home would require more care than I could provide alone.
As the new year dawned, so did a new chapter in an assisted living facility. Ray worked tirelessly with the dedicated staff, embracing neuroplasticity to regain control of his body. His routine became a symphony of therapies—physical, occupational, speech, recreational, and counseling. We were by his side every day, supporting him in every way possible. Though nights were spent apart, Ray’s progress became evident: he began to eat pureed foods, his speech improved, and his balance grew steadier. Yet, as he advanced, his mental health wavered, prompting discussions about home visits and the next steps in his care.
We began the ongoing process of transforming our home into a haven for Ray, focusing on wheelchair accessibility and safety. So far, we’ve widened some doorways, adapted the shower, and installed grab bars. By March, these initial modifications allowed Ray to return home—a milestone in our collective efforts. Yet, we quickly recognized that this was just the beginning of a much larger journey. Thankfully, a family member stepped in to provide Ray with the attentive care he needed during this crucial time. However, our work is far from over. There are still many modifications to be completed, including additional grab bars and further widening of doors. The task can feel overwhelming, but we are committed to making our home a place where Ray can thrive.
As Ray’s therapies picked up again, I was grateful for the summer months I had off as a teacher, which allowed me to be there for him at home. Together, we navigated his path to recovery, cherishing each moment of progress. However, with the new school year on the horizon, a cloud of uncertainty hangs over us. Ray’s need for constant care—a service our insurance does not cover—remains. Hiring caregivers is an expensive but necessary part of his recovery, with costs starting at $35 an hour. Even the smallest changes to our home to accommodate his needs are financially taxing. As I prepare to return to teaching, the question of how to ensure Ray’s care continues looms large.
This is the driving force behind our GoFundMe campaign. We seek your support to secure caregiving assistance for Ray as I return to work. He needs a compassionate hand to guide him towards independence. Your generosity will not only aid in his recovery but will also empower him to reclaim the independence he so fiercely desires.
