Retired K9 Medical Support

Tax deductible
Police K9s are a valuable tool in protecting a city - detecting drugs, protecting officers, finding lost people (especially children), deterring aggression, and chasing down fleeing criminals. Once trained, K9s usually can work about 5 years before the physical demands of the job force them to retire. In more cases, their RPD partner assumes ownership and becomes responsible for their care and feeding. Medical expenses for these retired dogs can add up.

Helping with Vet Expenses

The Richardson Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association (RCPAAA) recognizes the service of the Richardson Police K9s and seeks to honor them by aiding their two-legged partners with some of the veterinary expenses that might arise during retirement. In 2016, a fund was created to help cover some of those expenses. For their service to the City, the K9s deserve to live out their remaining years happy and comfortable.

The Retired K9 Medical Reimbursement Fund will reimburse the retired K9’s partner/owner for 80% of medical related expenses. The K9’s partner/owner is responsible for the remaining balance.

A few months ago, RPD K9 Ringo retired after six and a half years of serving the City of Richardson. Several weeks ago, he was diagnosed with a perineal hernia that will require some expensive surgery.

In anticipation of this surgery, we are seeking to build up the Fund to not only cover Ringo's upcoming procedure, but to create a balance that will aid in any future medical bills.

A little about the newly retired Ringo:

·         Ringo is a Belgian Malinois (affectionately called “Maligators” by those who have witnessed their biting technique.)

·         Turned 9 years old in December 2019

·         Born in Holland

·         His initial training was in Dutch but after joining the RPD, he was trained using German commands, proving a variation of the old saying “you can’t teach a seasoned officer a new ‘trick’, but you can teach a young dog a new language”!

·         During his service with the RPD, Ringo made 94 apprehensions. McGruff the Crime Dog would be proud because in three of those, he took a “bite out of crime”.

·         He was deployed to search for narcotics several thousand times and detected its presence over 1100 times resulting in about 700 arrests.
