 Support Nathan Smallwood’s Family

Before November, 2020, Katherine and Michael Smallwood were like any busy family - working and raising their three young children, Hannah 8, Nathan 5, and Paisley 3. Things took an unexpected turn on Nov 10, 2020 when Nathan was admitted to QEH following seizure like activity. After a CT scan showed a brain tumor, Nathan was transported by ambulance to the IWK, where he underwent a risky 8-hour surgery. Neurosurgeons were only able to remove about half of the tumor because of the tumor location, and the high risk to Nathan's speech. It was thought at the time the tumor looked benign. As Nathan recovered from the surgery and the family awaited pathology reports, they returned to PEI and tried to regain some normalcy. The girls, who had been staying with family, had missed their parents and brother immensely when they were away. Nathan being such a positive little boy took it all in stride. As he celebrated his 6th birthday November 27th, he said, as he often does, “this was the best day ever!”

By early Dec, in the midst of a pandemic and with Christmas fast approaching, Katherine and Michael received the devastating news that the pathology report showed Nathan’s brain tumor to be cancerous and very aggressive.

Katherine and Michael expect to be heading back to the IWK with Nathan before Christmas, to face another high-risk brain surgery and possibly months of chemotherapy, as he begins the greatest fight of his young life. Meanwhile, family and friends in P.E.I. will be caring for Hannah and Paisley.

This family has been dealt a tragic situation, and they are trying very hard to remain positive and hopeful. The family will be under tremendous financial strain over the course of Nathan’s treatment, including loss of pay, accommodation, food, and travel costs.
