My Dad is an incredible husband, father, grand father, brother, and an even greater friend to many. He has always been my hero, the one I could call for anything, knowing he would have a solution. If I needed a smile, I’d call him; if a home improvement idea struck me in the middle of the night, he was the first person I’d reach out to.

He embodies hard work and kindness, always willing to give his last dollar to someone in need. Today, I’m reaching out to everyone who knows and loves him to ask for your support.

On Friday, May 9th, he called out of work due to severe pain in his right leg. Shortly after, he developed flu-like symptoms that escalated rapidly, leading to his admission into critical care that same night. His condition progressed so quickly that he experienced septic shock. While being monitored, he suffered two strokes, which thankfully did not result in lasting damage. He was immediately treated for septic shock, and I witnessed him receiving life-saving medication.

By Monday, May 12th, he underwent a Transesophageal Echocardiogram, where the cardiology team confirmed that his mitral heart valve had been severely damaged due to the infection and septic shock, necessitating open-heart surgery for repair. He was expected to remain in the hospital for three weeks of intensive antibiotics before the surgery.

Things began to improve as he regained strength, walking laps around his unit and working to keep his lungs strong in preparation for surgery.

However, on Saturday, May 17th, he woke up feeling unwell again. His headache worsened to the point where he needed IV medication, and he lost the ability to walk with his left leg. After extensive examinations, we learned he had a blood clot in the arterial artery of his leg that required emergency surgery. A full-body scan revealed two additional blood clots. Before his vascular surgery, an MRI of his brain identified an aneurysm that required immediate intervention. In the past 12 hours, my dad underwent two emergency surgeries.

He is currently in the Cardiothoracic ICU, where he will remain for the foreseeable future. His surgeons are doing everything possible to save him. At this moment, another clot is developing, and they are working diligently to restore his health so they can proceed with the open-heart surgery on his mitral valve.

Following the open-heart surgery, my Dad will require eight weeks of rehabilitation. With him unwell, my Mom and siblings have taken on his financial responsibilities, and we are seeking assistance with the mounting medical expenses that are burdening our family.

My Dad has never been one to ask for help; he has always been the one to offer it. I’m asking everyone to support him during this uncertain time. Any contribution, no matter how small, would greatly ease the burden on our family.

Mi papá es un esposo, padre, abuelo, hermano increíble, y un buen amigo para muchos. Siempre ha sido mi héroe, la persona a la que podía llamar para cualquier cosa, sabiendo que tendría una solución. Si necesitaba una sonrisa, lo llamaba; si se me ocurría una idea para mejorar la casa en plena noche, él era la primera persona a la que acudía.

Él representa el trabajo duro y la bondad, siempre dispuesto a dar su último dólar a quien lo necesitara. Hoy, me dirijo a todos los que lo conocen y lo quieren para pedir su apoyo.

El viernes 9 de mayo, se ausentó del trabajo debido a un dolor severo en su pierna derecha. Poco después, desarrolló síntomas similares a los de la gripe que empeoraron rápidamente, lo que llevó a su hospitalización en cuidados críticos esa misma noche. Su condición progresó tan rápidamente que entró en estado de shock séptico. Mientras era monitoreado, sufrió dos derrames cerebrales, que afortunadamente no causaron daños permanentes. Fue tratado de inmediato por el shock séptico, y fui testigo de cómo recibía medicamentos que le salvaron la vida.

Para el lunes 12 de mayo, se le realizó una ecocardiografía transesofágica, donde el equipo de cardiología confirmó que su válvula mitral había sido gravemente dañada debido a la infección y al shock séptico, lo que requería una cirugía a corazón abierto para su reparación. Se esperaba que permaneciera en el hospital durante tres semanas recibiendo antibióticos intensivos antes de la operación.

Las cosas comenzaron a mejorar cuando recuperó fuerzas, caminando vueltas alrededor de su unidad y trabajando para mantener sus pulmones fuertes en preparación para la cirugía.

Sin embargo, el sábado 17 de mayo, se despertó sintiéndose mal nuevamente. Su dolor de cabeza empeoró hasta el punto de requerir medicación intravenosa, y perdió la capacidad de caminar con su pierna izquierda. Después de múltiples exámenes, supimos que tenía un coágulo de sangre en la arteria de su pierna que requería cirugía de emergencia. Un escaneo corporal completo reveló otros dos coágulos. Antes de la cirugía vascular, una resonancia magnética de su cerebro identificó un aneurisma que requería intervención inmediata. En las últimas 12 horas, mi papá se ha sometido a dos cirugías de emergencia.

Actualmente se encuentra en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Cardiotorácicos, donde permanecerá en el futuro cercano. Sus cirujanos están haciendo todo lo posible por salvarle la vida. En este momento, otro coágulo se está desarrollando y están trabajando intensamente para estabilizarlo y poder proceder con la cirugía a corazón abierto para reparar su válvula mitral.

Después de la cirugía a corazón abierto, mi papá necesitará ocho semanas de rehabilitación. Con él enfermo, mi mamá y mis hermanos han asumido sus responsabilidades financieras, y estamos buscando ayuda para cubrir los crecientes gastos médicos que están afectando a nuestra familia.

Mi papá nunca ha sido alguien que pida ayuda; siempre ha sido quien la ofrece. Por eso, les pido a todos que lo apoyen en este momento tan incierto. Cualquier contribución, por pequeña que sea, aliviaría enormemente la carga sobre nuestra familia.
