"May the Fourth be with you."
Marcus Kelley said that every single birthday. Born May 4th, 1971, in Memphis, Tennessee, he was an unashamed Star Wars fanatic, a brilliant legal mind, a man of deep faith, and the kind of father who drove two hours and fifteen minutes every single Friday night for four straight years just to watch his son William play football and his daughter Sarah cheer from the sidelines.

He didn't just show up. He was famous for it. Opposing teams knew him by name. His voice carried across every field, every bleacher, every Friday night under the lights. That was Marcus. Impossible to ignore, impossible not to love.

On Sunday, February 22nd, 2026, Judge Marcus Kelley, the Presiding Superior Court Judge of La Paz County, collapsed at home from sudden cardiac arrest. He was 54 years old. His wife Nickie and his children were by his side. His children, William and Sarah, both still in high school, lost the father who was their loudest champion, their biggest fan, and their unwavering north star. He also leaves behind his Mother and his Step-Dad.

A Life of Service Over Self
Marcus never chased money. He chased purpose.
He came to Arizona in 1979 and made it his home. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Arizona, and became a Wildcat fan for life, unapologetically. He went on to attend Samford Law School and graduated from the prestigious Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York.

His career reads like a roadmap of a man who wanted to serve at every level:
  • He interned for Congressman Dan Lundgren in Washington, D.C.
  • He worked for the American Conservative Union and the Republican Study Committee
  • He served at Federal Financial Analytics, Inc.
  • He worked alongside Representative and Senator Andy Biggs
  • He served in the Arizona Attorney General's Office under Mark Brnovich
  • He worked at Goldman & Zwillinger, PLLC
  • He prosecuted cases as an attorney for the La Paz County Prosecutor's Office

On January 4, 2023, he was elected Presiding Superior Court Judge of La Paz County, the culmination of a lifetime dedicated to justice.
He also served as a school board member for Choice Academies for eight years, was a respected political analyst and commentator, and a high school wrestler and math award recipient from Woodruff High School in South Carolina who never stopped competing, never stopped pushing, and never stopped believing in the power of hard work.

At every turn, Marcus chose the job that mattered over the job that paid. And Nickie, his wife of 22 years and a schoolteacher, stood right beside him, sharing that sacrifice, building a life rooted in faith, family, and community.

The Man Behind the Robe
If you knew Marcus, you have a story.
Maybe it was the Christmas party where he played Santa, and rotated the role year to year so the kids could never quite figure out who was under the beard. Maybe it was the late-night conversation about faith that changed the way you saw the world. Marcus came to Christ after years of skepticism, and his testimony moved everyone who heard it. His faith wasn't quiet. It was bold, honest, and Christ-like, earned through wrestling with doubt.

Maybe it was the time he slept on your couch because you were running for office and needed one more person knocking doors. Or the meal he and Nickie brought to your family when life got heavy. Or the countless hours, unpaid and unasked, that he and Nickie spent campaigning for friends and causes across Arizona, because they believed in people more than politics.

Marcus was the friend who showed up. Every time. For everyone.
He was quick with a joke, sharp in debate, tender with his kids, and fiercely loyal to the people he loved: his wife Nickie, his son William, his daughter Sarah, his nieces, nephews, stepbrother, stepsister, in-laws, and a circle of friends that stretches across decades and state lines. He loved history, loved reading, loved his family, and loved this state.

Why We Need Your Help
Marcus dedicated his life to public service. He didn't build wealth. He built community. And now, without warning, his family is left without their provider, their protector, and their center of gravity.

Nickie and the kids are facing:
  • Funeral and memorial costs
  • Medical and hospital bills from his sudden passing
  • The immediate loss of their primary household income
  • The financial burden of keeping William and Sarah in school and on track for the college education Marcus dreamed of for them.

Nickie is a teacher. She gave alongside Marcus every step of the way. Now she needs us to give back.

May the Fourth be with you, Marcus. Always.
