Crystal Bird is a storyteller and healer rooted in Texas for more generations than memory can count. As a mother and an artist, she has shown herself as a beacon of light and a voice for justice in our time.
In the fall, Crystal Bird Caviel will begin her path to become a therapist. Her vision is to provide mental health support in Austin for Black people, by Black people. Your financial support is a direct investment in Black communities in Austin.
She shares her vision here:
I was recently admitted to the Master's program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest. This is where all the paths of my life have converged. This program promises to be everything I have envisioned. I started SpiritHouse Theatre last year with the intention of healing our communities through art and storytelling, but in the wake of all that has happened, it became crystal clear to me that I needed to heed the voice that was telling me to become a therapist so I could be armed with the tools to really be an effective healer.
Now more than ever, Black folks need Black therapists. I am thrilled at the prospect of conspiring with other Black people to be agents of healing and joy in their own lives. I am inspired by therapist and thought leader Resmaa Menakem, whose somatic work focuses on addressing trauma caused by white body supremacy and repairing the centuries of damage done to the Black body and psyche. BIPOC especially need access to these healing modalities in this time of great change and upheaval.
Becoming an LPC will help me do this.
I appreciate you all supporting me on my mission to support my community!

We are asking for $22,000 to fund the first year of this 3 year program. This money will cover tuition (16,200 yearly), books (2,400 yearly estimate) and childcare this year.
BLACK LIFE IS SACRED
we are alchemists;
we hold our pain
and spin it to gold-
we perform miracles.
