Let me officially introduce myself, my name is Rachel Isabel Mukendi, I am a black female artist living in London.
The aim of this fundraiser, is so that a year from now I can fully support myself and have the means to explore my creativity. But first I need your help.
20k will go towards the following:
- Financial freedom for a year to be able to comfortably create art
- A new Laptop (my laptop broke 2 months ago)
- Website, domains and online stores are costly
- Art studio space to rent so I have somewhere to create
- Printing fees to support large scale prints
- Digital camera and tripod to document work
- Giving people more access to my work
- Starting the foundations of the Nkuna Arts Institution
After graduating from art school, only then did I feel comfortable to use my practice to explore my identity.
My collages were created to explore the autonomy of black women. They were created as a direct response to the lack of representation within the arts. They were created to make you sit still, in moments where you didn’t even know you needed to, to help you breathe, to help you think about everything and nothing at all at the same time. I recycle images and piece them together to create a narrative, a dialogue that’s beyond the conversations surrounding the black female body, the worlds we house inside of ourselves, the things we say out loud. Our existence has consistently been politicised. We are a force of nature and we have endured everything.
I had a conversation with my mother, a day after posting this campaign, she asked me what my longer term plan was, I had to take a moment to think.
"Nkuna Isabel" was the name given to me by my mother, the force of nature who holds me accountable, I was named after her mother, my Koko as we say in Lingala, meaning grandma. "Rachel" was the Christian name given to me by father, my passionate father who never stopped providing and gave me strength and courage.
Nkuna pronounced (Ku-nah) will be the name of the institution I build, an institution that in my grandmothers name because that woman is strength, light and love. This same energy was passed down through my mother and on to all of my sisters.
This art institution will not be built from the backs of slavery. It will built on our collective community. To create and elevate.
The Nkuna Art institute. The first in its name.
