Interim Housing for Unhoused College Students

Tax deductible

Help us provide housing for unhoused college students.

Help unhoused college students thrive in college, by providing a home, food and community. We need your support to kick start a new student housing program on church properties.

This is an exciting and unique opportunity.

Together we can provide a safe place to live for 15 unhoused college or career path students, many of whom are former foster youth.

Currently one in five community college students and one in four university students are experiencing homelessness and food insecurity in Los Angeles. It is believed those numbers will increase due to Covid.

While many college students receive tuition scholarships, more often than not, the assistance does not cover housing or food.

Our story begins at The Thacher School, a private boarding school in Ojai, California. Thacher used modular dorm units for additional housing during Covid. Thacher offered to sell them to Stories from the Frontline at a reduced price.

Pastor Dyke Redmond of Sunnyside Baptist Church in South Central LA enthusiastically offered to place the dorms on his parking lot.

The containers have arrived! Now we need to hook them up and move the students in!

Any donation will make a direct impact on the lives of the students. Your contribution can change the trajectory of 15 very fortunate students.

The impact of homelessness has a lasting effect on a young person’s ability to graduate from college and get a decent job. Unhoused students suffer debilitating anxiety and fear when they don't have a safe place to live, food to eat or access to WiFi to study. Resourceful students, who have gone through numerous hoops just to get to college, often study in the library and shower in the gym bathrooms.

Your support will fund the ongoing programs these students need.

We face a funding gap of just over $350,000

$150,000 to complete Installation

$17 a day to feed a student, ($119 per week).

$150 provides 1 hour of therapy for a student recovering from the PTSD of homelessness.

$2500 is needed for an outdoor eating area - tables, tenting, fencing.

$17,000 is needed for electrical upgrades to the church and the new housing.

$45,000 To refurbish a garage for a community and study center equipped with storage and a small kitchen.

$1500 is needed for grant writing for the funding of much needed services.

Thanks in advance for your contribution!

Ending student homelessness will ensure that more students will overcome the mental and physical issues that can derail their chances to graduate. Together we can provide an opportunity that can surely change the trajectory of their lives!

We’re offering safety and security to these students by providing desperately needed affordable housing in South Los Angeles and we invite you to join us.

With success, this innovative program can be replicated on other church properties.

Donate what you can to Sunnyside Baptist Church's Sunnyside 5 program. We are thankful for your generosity of spirit and your concern for our unhoused youth.

Huge kudos to LA County Supervisor Holly Mitchell for the generous funding to purchase and transport the dorms!

Thank you for your participation in this project!
