Meet Sugar. Sugar is our much loved 7 month old Golden Retriever. She was our Christmas gift to our children. We thought that we were getting a vetted puppy from a breefer from Amish country. Lo and behold, we got a crippled pup from a puppy mill. Regardless of her condition, she is the sweetest soul that we have ever encountered. When we notified the breeder of her birth defects, we were told to return her to them for a new puppy. They would euthanize her. How could we do that? Sugar is a member of our family! You don't return a baby if she isn't perfect. Pet insurance will not cover her medical care as all of her issues were pre-existing. We had xRays taken to asses her situation and learned she has double hip dysplasia, a bent and twisted femur and a twisted spine. The first step to help her live a happy life is to amputate her bad leg. The Orthopedic Surgeon assured us that if he ever felt that she was suffering, he would let us know. The opposite hind leg has bowed out as it has had to do all the work. She may need surgery ( or a second amputation) to fix the "good" leg. We have purchased a wheelchair to help her take the pressure off of her hind legs and take her for strolls in her Xtra-large dog stroller. Any money remaining will be donated to another dog in a similar situation.
