Starting Over From the Forest Floor – And Never Giving Up

Hi, I’m Will, some know me as Todd. I’m 50 years old, an American who’s lived in Spain for 25 years. I’m a father, trail guide and longtime art director and videogame artist. For the past year, I’ve been living off-grid in the forests outside Barcelona—sleeping in a tent, navigating life without steady work for two years.

I’m here because I’m fighting to stay in Spain—for my children, who live here. I want to be close, to rebuild my life with integrity, and to eventually support them again however I can.

This lifestyle wasn’t chosen lightly. Nature became my refuge while I worked to find footing again. I’ve leaned on a small, amazing network of friends who help with food and a few euros when they can. But just days ago, the fragile balance I built was shattered—my backpack was stolen while I slept.

Inside was nearly everything I owned:

-MacBook – my tool for resumes, art, and rebuilding my freelance career

-Digital tablet – for journaling, drawing, and a children’s book I’ve been writing

-Kindle – for nighttime reading in the tent

-Passport, ID, and bank cards – all gone

-Rain jacket, headlamp, headphones, reading glasses, keys, charging cables – daily survival gear

-Two pocket knives and a multitool – including one my father gave me 30 years ago, something I carried every day. Its loss hits hard.

This wasn’t just theft. It was a full reset.

But I’m still standing. And I’m reaching out because I believe people want to help someone who’s trying to rise—honestly, humbly, and with heart.

Hola, soy Will, aunque algunos me conocen como Todd. Tengo 50 años y soy un estadounidense que lleva 25 años viviendo en España. Soy padre, guía de montaña y he trabajado muchos años como director de arte y artista de videojuegos. Pero hace solo unos días, el frágil equilibrio que había construido se rompió—me robaron la mochila mientras dormía.

Dentro llevaba casi todo lo que poseía:

MacBook – mi herramienta para hacer currículums, arte, y reconstruir mi carrera como freelance

Tableta digital – para escribir mi diario, dibujar, y un libro infantil que estoy escribiendo

Kindle – para leer por la noche en la tienda

Pasaporte, DNI y tarjetas bancarias – todo desaparecido

Chubasquero, frontal, auriculares, gafas de lectura, llaves, cables de carga – equipo esencial para el día a día

Dos navajas y una multiherramienta – incluida una que me regaló mi padre hace 30 años, algo que llevaba siempre conmigo. Perderla me duele profundamente.

Esto no fue solo un robo. Fue un reinicio total.

Pero sigo de pie. Y recurro a ti porque creo que la gente quiere ayudar a quien lucha por salir adelante—con honestidad, humildad y corazón.
