To my community,
I hope all of you reading this are in good health and spirits given the times we are living in. I write this as someone who’s very passionate about justice and believes in integrity and standing up strongly for what’s right. I am honored everyday to be able to serve my community and help build a brighter future that’s equitable for all to thrive in.
For the past 8 months I’ve been a Project Manager at an Oakland chapter of a national non-profit that claims to serve women, people of color, immigrants, the formerly incarcerated, and low-income communities.
It is very regrettable to announce that I was unjustly terminated Friday June 5th by this same social justice organization. My termination came days after I requested in an email, signed by co-workers, to all the staff requesting to have a conversation about racism and what’s happening due to #GeorgeFloyd.
On our nationwide all-staff video call the following day after my request was made, we were told that the entire call would be about racism. I was happy that we were the type of organization to hold these difficult conversations so we can learn and grow. However, I was singled out and scolded by management publicly, and my email that multiple people had signed with me was called “disgusting”. The Director of HR silenced me from speaking, put me on mute, and said “You have spoken enough.”
That call was on Wednesday and by Friday morning I was out of a job.
This unjust treatment and retaliation in the midst of COVID-19 and a social uprising, from a national social justice organization that serves communities in every major city across the US, is extremely hurtful.
I am coming to you as my community asking for support. I am now unemployed and have to provide for myself and my 5 year old. I am asking for anything you can give to help support us with basic needs and legal costs that may incur down the road as I fight this illegal firing.
Some of you I may know, some of you I might not. I ask if you do know me, and you know the organization I am referring to, to please not speak on it yet.
Trust and believe I am in no way protecting the identity of this organization that should be held accountable. However, I am trying to protect myself and my co-workers by approaching this the best way possible . I will speak on it in due time.
Know that I will continue fighting for justice whether or not I am organizing from an office, or in the streets.
