Support Amber and Nick: A Fight for Life and Family

Donation protected
Dear Friends and Family,

We are reaching out to you during a profoundly difficult time for our loved ones, Amber Lynn Hockaday and Nick Hockaday. Recently, Amber endured a septic abortion that led to septic shock, requiring immediate medical attention and an ICU stay. As a result, she will be unable to work for an unknown period, putting an immense financial strain on their family.

Amber's medical condition was critical, with alarming lab results indicating severe infection and distress:

  • Procalcitonin level: greater than 55 (a marker indicating a severe bacterial infection)
  • White Blood Cell (WBC) count: greater than 35 (indicating a significant immune response to infection)
  • Lactate level: greater than 18 (showing poor blood flow and potential organ failure)
  • Bicarbonate level: less than 13 (indicating severe acidosis and impaired metabolic function)

To stabilize her condition, Amber was placed on vasoactive drugs to support her blood pressure, highlighting the severity of her situation.

In addition to her fight for her life, Amber received distressing news that her department at Harlingen Medical Center, where she works as an Obstetric Certified Surgical Technician, is closing in 30-90 days. Unfortunately, there are currently no leads for her to continue employment, adding to the uncertainty and stress for their family.

In a heartbreaking twist, the circumstances surrounding Amber's situation were influenced by the Texas Fetal Heartbeat Law, which restricts access to reproductive healthcare.

This law can force women into life-threatening situations, and in Amber's case, her unborn baby, Vanellope Marceline Hockaday, was born on December 1st, 2024, weighing just 8 ounces, saving her life.

If the pregnancy had continued to be viable, Amber's health would have been placed in an even more severe and life-threatening situation.

Prior to this tragedy, Amber was eagerly preparing their home for the arrival of Vanellope while also caring for her 4-year-old daughter. This unexpected crisis has disrupted their plans and left them in a state of desperation.

We have created this GoFundMe campaign to help cover their home and medical expenses during this challenging time. Every donation, no matter how small, will go directly to supporting Amber and Nick as they navigate this difficult journey.

Additionally, we welcome your prayers and kind words to uplift their spirits. Your support means the world to them and can make a significant difference in their lives right now.

Thank you for your generosity and compassion.

With gratitude,
Her family and friends

********UPDATE**********
Update on Amber and Nick Hockaday

Amber underwent an emergency D and C and was stable enough to be discharged on Monday night. Unfortunately, they had a personal viewing for their baby, as funeral homes do not provide formal services for infants weighing 8 ounces. Consequently, Amber will not receive a birth certificate or a death certificate for their daughter, Vanellope.

As you all know, Amber works in obstetrics, and while she was in the hospital, she learned that her unit will be closing. Currently, there are no leads on this very specialized position as an obstetric certified surgical technician, and any leads for job opportunities would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your continued support during this heartbreaking time. Your kindness means so much to them.
