Over the years the Daughters of Charity Disability Support Services has worked towards supporting the residents of the campus to transfer to new homes in the community. This supports each person to access facilities within their local community and be a valued member of the community. This October 2020 the service is supporting 8 adult residents to transfer to beautiful new homes in the community, hopefully their homes for the remainder of their lives. The houses whilst meeting each individual’s needs and requirements, are more conducive to community living and inclusion.

The houses are based in rural settings, which was the wish of the residents. There are no public transport routes, and in some cases public transport would not always meet each individual’s needs.

This is where our request to you comes. Each of the two houses will need a suitable vehicle (wheelchair accessible). By having wheelchair accessible vehicles it will enable the residents to gain independence and become valued members of their local community where they truly belong.  This is a huge fundraising effort and we would be very grateful of any support you can give us to achieve this for the residents.

While their move from a congregated setting is an exciting time for the residents, in order to prevent isolation from their local community, suitable transport to access local amenities is paramount, the residents have always been supported to live purposeful and meaningful lives, however this opportunity provides them with the ability to live better lives as part of their local community.

Below is a testimonial from Ann who is benefitting from the independent living program.

“My name is Ann and I’m a 54 year old lady.  I’ve lived at the campus in St. Vincent’s Centre since I was 4 years old, I’m so excited about moving into my new home in the community. I will now live in a house like my family and my  friends and  like them  I’ll be travelling every day in a car owned by my house to my activities and to access community facilities, going shopping, socialising, visiting my family and friends.  I use a wheelchair to get around and my new home has all the adaptations that I require. With the help of staff I’ve had great fun picking out my bedroom colours and furnishing, I hope to move along with 3 of my friends into my new home before Christmas. As public transport doesn’t meet all of our needs with timetables, routes etc our own vehicle will be the icing on the cake to make this move perfect”  Ann.
