Just a few months ago, 2-year-old Spokes was on the euthanasia list at the shelter for being paralyzed and needed immediate exit. We knew we had to get him out and we promised to give him the life he deserves.

He was in bad shape when we took him in - caked in feces and terribly wounded from dragging his legs. The shelter said he’d never recover - but they didn’t know Spokes.

Spokes has an undeniable zest for life and a fierce determination that inspires us every day. In just weeks, he was wagging his tail. Then, slowly, he began to stand. Given the unknown amount of time since he became paralyzed, surgery wasn’t initially presented as a viable option, but we didn’t give up hope. Instead, we started physical therapy and electroacupuncture. And today, Spokes is showing us what hope truly looks like - recently, he moved his left hind leg on his own!

Spokes has an entire medical team across three hospitals rooting for him and watching him defy the odds of his initial prognosis every step of the way. His resilience is inspiring and now, we have a chance to give him even more. Because his reflexes are intact, we were referred to a neurology specialist for a comprehensive examination.

The neurology team at LAASER believes Spokes could be a candidate for life-changing spinal surgery - and we can confirm his candidacy with an MRI. If the MRI looks good, he will go straight from the MRI suite to the operating room. The goal of the surgery would be to relieve the pressure on his spinal cord and give him the opportunity to try to walk again. But we need your help to give him this chance.

The cost of this surgery is nearly $10,000 - a sum our small rescue cannot manage alone. But together, we can make a difference. Together, we can give Spokes the best possible chance to walk again.

Is there a risk the surgery won’t be successful? Yes, there is always that risk. But Spokes is determined to walk and we are ready to do the best we can to make that happen for him. At worst, if he is a candidate for surgery, the neurologist believes it will relieve pain in his spine. At best, he will walk again and will not need to rely on wheels or humans to help him navigate the world. He will gain independence and get to live the rest of his long, happy life like a regular dog. If Spokes isn’t a candidate, the money we raise for Spokes will be used strictly for him - to continue his physical therapy and electroacupuncture.
