Michaela's NJIT S.T.E.M. Program
Donazione protetta
Hello Family and Friends,
After a failed attempt to secure funding from our District here in Teaneck, NJ, we are reaching out to our beloved family and friends with pressing deadline approaching to emplore your help in sending our lovely Michaela Kennedy Glavin (otherwise known as "Sissy") to the prestigious New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). The Program is officially titled, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Summer 2015 Early College Preparatory Program - Mechanical Engineering - FEMME6. It runs Monday through Thursday, July 6th through August 6, 2015 from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. This is a highly competitive program and to have been selected from an elite pool of her young peers is a tremendous opportunity. Sissy is a part of a growing group of girls that have, independently, decided not to allow her gender to define or limit her. They are arming themselves with the knowledge that, obtaining a solid education will open doors in any and every area of Engineering they may choose. She has further determined to not allow her minority female status to be an obstacle. We, her family, are very supportive of her interest and endeavors.
Upon receipt of her acceptance, we petitioned the Teaneck Township School District for tuition assistance. And sadly, today, (June 10, 2015), we received notice that no scholarship would be provided. As difficult as it is to accept, that our tax dollars do not motivate the powers that be in our local government to support our bright, up and coming, daughter who at the ripe young age of 11 years old has been on the Prinicpal's Honor Roll for all of her Middle School Life (5th & 6th grade) - with an A+ average every single marking period. Michaela is the child that her teachers talk about wanting to "clone." In parent teacher conference, we've heard names like Condolesa Rice and Michelle Obama used to characterize her potential. She holds a position as a 300 Club Member on the NJASK Math (perfect score 2014). She is the bright, enthusiastic, energetic kid that reaches out to help others in need. Michaela is a well-rounded young lady that makes the grades; but also gets involved. Along with her fellow Girl Scouts from Troop #19 in Teaneck, she spoke before the newly elected Mayor Lizette Parker and the Town Council. Collectively working towards their bronze award Michaela and her troop identified a problem and became Advocates for the local wildlife; did their research and spread awareness: generating a self-produced PSA video revealing the devastating effects of plastic bags; and presented to the council a solution: To band the use of single use plastic bags in grocery stores in the Teaneck area. This campaign took months of preparation, planning and execution. She's played violin for several years, sings in a school Chorus and is active with her youth group Metro Merge at church.
We're confident that those who love Michaela will support her with generous donations to further her education... Unfortunately, if the full tuition of $1,210 is not paid by this Friday, June 12, 2015, she will forfeit her earned place in the program; and it will be given to another child on their waiting list. We refuse to believe that the lack of funds will be the reason she is not able to attend. That is where you can help - with a donation. No donation is too small. But time is of the essence...so please don't delay. We thank you in advance for you kind consideration and generosity! Growing up we often heard the UNCF slogan... A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Help Michaela continue to expand and sharpen hers. With technology, we can take the saying, "...it takes a village..." to a whole other level. We are only limited by our own imagination.
Blessings,
Her Familly
