Hello World.
I asked for help previously to save a caravan I was living in whilst waiting for adaptations and repairs to a Sandwell MBC property that I moved to five years ago. Building regulations are very clear about how a wheelchair accessible dwelling shoud enable the tenant to be independent and reach all areas of the plot, however the only grab rails installed at the property were fitted in the shower and by the front/back doors by NHS contrators in June 2023, to "reduce preventable falls" after 3 years of hospitalisations for concussions and back injuries falling down stairs.
The toilet in November 2020 - OT's have explained that the bathroom is not accessible and the boxing has not been reinforced so they cannot have a grab rail attached, they refuse to move the basin and a wheelchar commode that I have to use to shower obstructs my wheelchair in the tight space. The room is 220 x 190cm and does not have room to rotate a wheelchair.
Garden steps obstruct my ability to access the garden to maintain t as per my tenancy agreement.
The kitchen installed in November 2021 was inaccessible - no room for my legs under the countertops, no shelf under the cooker, and the oven was placed next t the kitchen door.
It scorched the doorframe the first time I grilled toast but the OT and Adaptations "specialist" kept saying it was an accessible kitchen and they would not rectify it.
Friends helped me work on the property and in November 2022 I began a new role at a recruitment agency but still spent up to 4 hours per day on life admin trying to access appropriate support and adaptations for the bungalow, an army of advocates tried their best as well but council staff refuse to follow policy and proceedure.
I keep receiving Legal Aid awards but haven't been able to find a solicitor who accepts legal aid to look at the photos, videos and correspondence. In September 2023, still unable to negotiate ANY adaptations by Sandwell council, the stress and trauma led to a huge MH crisis and I set fire to the kitchen in a misguided and desperate attempt to access a prison cell where I believed I would be safer.
I lived in a caravan from September 2023 to February 2025 waiting for the council to repair the kitchen and for the other adaptations in the bathroom and garden, which was originally scheduled to take 6 to 8 weeks, but in January 2025 Lisa Ellis paid me £125 compensation to apologise for the delays and in February 2025 James McLaughlin and Sukhjinder Sahota the Head of DEI met with me to discuss my concernsd about the bungalow and previous experiences in Tipton and apologised. SMBC also told Cornwall council that they offered me wheelchair accessible accomodation after I made a homeless application.
In February 2025, Sandwell Council housing fficer Janet Millet housed me at Manifoldia Grange AGAIN (I was housed there for 5 months in 2020 and found the building inaccessible - doors too heavy to open, bathroom too small for my wheelchair etc) and this happened
Yet staff repeatedly and openly ignored safeguarding concerns and joked about the standard unit
By mid March I was feeling punch drunk , James was still ghosting me (he has yet to provide the response promised on February 11th and his line managers are ignoring requests to escalate the complaint.
Staff kept leaving me without access to food and water or the toilet, on March 27th things came to a head https://youtu.be/GhKAwDFv6HA?si=IEfKRqC8I-UVkblJ
More time has passed, I've explored Cornwall to John O Groats, helped charities support communities and inclusion, learned to dance in a wheelchair and swim with one leg.
