My dream is to serve others, not only through the application of science, but also through example. I hope to inspire Black and brown children to pursue their dreams no matter what background they come from, or the lack of representation they may have had growing up. This campaign is dedicated towards helping me afford a flight and housing in Berkeley, California, to pursue a research opportunity in physics. Only sixty-six Black women have ever earned a PhD in physics -- I intend to join them.
Growing up in a family with a history of severe mental illness has inspired me to pursue research that aims to treat, prevent and cure such conditions. Experiencing the lack of representation mentioned above, as well as growing up with such circumstances, has had a large impact on my path.
Recently, I accepted an offer from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to study particles and how they interact. This laboratory is a member of the Department of Energy (D.O.E.), which is a leader in top of the line research. I will be doing research primarily focused on electrons, which are typically considered the building blocks of nature, and will enhance my ability to study electric signals in the brain.
This is where you come in! Since the age of 15, I've lived in a dozen different places, away from my family, as a result of the mental illness I grew up around. I am financially independent and I would appreciate any donations to help send me to Berkeley.
[Update: 5/30/17]
Thank you to all who have donated thus far. You have helped me afford a huge chunk of expenses for this coming summer!I just wanted to post an update on what I have sorted out/will utilize your support for, as I have not laid this out since my original post:
-my plane ticket is funded (Woohoo!)
-I will be hosted for housing
-I plan to purchase a laptop (that has more capabilities than my current Chromebook) for the purposes of lab work
-will purchase a luggage bag
-will put funds towards public transportation
-food
-healthcare/basic needs that aren't covered by insurance
-other personal and/or self-care expenses
Thanks again and I will continue to post updates!
