I managed to get myself accepted to a very exciting and exclusive field school in Greenland in which I will be conducting archaeological survey and very limited amounts of excavation. The primary goal of the expedition is to try to gain an understanding of how climate change and the thawing of permafrost is affecting the archaeological heritage of Greenland and the Arctic more generally. This is an excellent learning opportunity for myself, as well as a valuable and important academic exercise that will inform the academic community as well as society as a whole as to the destructive forces of human-caused climate decay.
Needless to say, this trip will be quite expensive, and even with the significant bursary I am receiving, the trip will still cost well over 6000 dollars CAD including equipment. In fact, even getting to and from Greenland cost 1500 CAD, even before the flight from Toronto to Iceland.
I am asking for patronisation, as has historically been done in archaeology. I don't really think I will achieve my goal, but even a fraction of it will go a long way to alleviating some of the financial stress of the field school. There is no doubt this will be a very important life-altering trip that really does have some real-world impacts in terms of research.
I was admitted into the field school based on my academic performance (3.89 GPA at acceptance), my past experiences (2 years of Archaeological/Cultural Resource Management in the industry), my lab knowledge, my past history with camping and outdoorsmanship and a well-written cover letter. I was chosen as one of the 8 selected from over 100 applicants.
Every little bit helps, and yes I am in fact asking for handouts from strangers and friends. Help me go do this important research on the destruction of all of our heritage, be it Viking, Inuit or Dorset.
Fees I will have to pay are as follows:
-1 553.54 CAD Roundtrip from Iceland to Greenland and back.
-3 700 CAD for Field School, after 4002.08 CAD scholarship
-606 CAD Round Trip from Toronto to Iceland
-500ish CAD for equipment (Need a new -15C* sleeping bag, a new coat, potentially gators, bug net, a new lightweight backpack, new spring gloves, etc.)
Anyways, thanks for reading this far. I am going to take a tonne of pictures with my DSLR and upload them various places (probably including a flikr account). I am also including a couple of links regarding the expedition. Also, documentary crew will also be on site to produce a PBS documentary.
