She Fed Us For Years. Now Help Us Buy Her Accessible Home.

My name is Katie, and I am fighting for the woman who has been my anchor since I was a baby. Laura isn’t just my best friend; she is my sister. We grew up side-by-side, surviving the chaos of our teenage years together. When I lost my biological mother, Laura’s Mum stepped in. She fed me, she held me, and she raised me as her own. She is the mother of my heart. Now, the roles have reversed, and I am terrified. For the first time in our lives, the "little sister" has to save the "big sister." Laura and Mum are trapped in a dangerous situation 500 miles away from me, and every night I go to sleep praying they make it through to morning.
They are currently living in a rental that is a literal death trap. The house sits on a steep hill, cut off from the world by crumbling concrete stairs. After a series of devastating hospitalizations in 2024, Mum lost her mobility. She is now fully dependent on a wheelchair. Laura lives in constant, paralyzing terror. They have survived a house fire before—they know how fast life can turn to ash. If a fire broke out today, there is no way out. Laura physically cannot get her mother’s wheelchair down those stairs. They are stuck, waiting for a miracle, in a home that has become a cage.
This isn't just about a house; it’s about a woman’s soul. Mum is a trained Chef. She earned her Culinary Arts degree decades ago, but she never got to use it. She spent our entire childhood working grueling double shifts just to keep the lights on. She sacrificed her art and her passion so we could survive. Now, in the years when she should finally be able to enjoy her craft, the house won't let her. The kitchen in their rental is completely inaccessible. She sits in her wheelchair, inches away from the stove, unable to reach the burners. First, poverty kept her out of the kitchen. Now, architecture is keeping her out. It is a heartbreak I cannot put into words.
We are currently fighting on two fronts. Laura has submitted the paperwork to transition her housing voucher into a Homeownership Program. This would allow them to buy a safe, accessible home and finally build a stable future. But let me be clear: regardless of whether that paperwork is approved today or tomorrow, they MUST get out of this house. Staying in this "death trap" is not an option. Whether we are moving toward a mortgage or a safer, wheelchair-accessible rental, the costs of relocating a family in crisis are staggering. We are racing against a clock that doesn't care about bureaucracy. We are racing against the next emergency.
We are not just asking for help; we are working for our freedom. We are launching a startup called Ash and Oak Press—a creative media network featuring five YouTube channels, including The Adaptive Chef. This is our path to independence. We are treating this as a business from Day One, with the goal of generating enough income to get Laura off Social Security Disability and graduate the family off Section 8 entirely. We want to build something beautiful from the "ash" of our past, with the strength of the "oak." But we cannot build a future if we are fighting for our lives in a house that isn't safe.
Laura is scraping together every cent she has, but they are facing a mountain they cannot climb alone. We are raising funds to ensure that the moment a safe door opens, they have the means to walk—or roll—through it. Your donations will go directly toward relocation and safety, getting them out of the "trap" and into a barrier-free environment, securing a home by funding the down payment for the homeownership program or the steep deposits required for an accessible rental, and supporting the launch of Ash and Oak Press so they can become fully self-sufficient.
She worked so we could eat. Now, we are fighting so she can cook. Please, help me save my family. Any amount helps us break these chains. If you cannot donate, please share their story. Thank you for your generosity, your prayers, and your humanity.
