My name is Sean Shearer, a student of poetry and film at Hampshire College who was fortunate enough to get accepted into the prestigious Tin House Poetry Workshop this summer at Reed College. This small program combines morning workshops with afternoon seminars, career panels, and will give me the guidance necessary to complete a professional manuscript while working with some of the most renowned poets in the country.
My poetry career is fairly new, but I have already received five publications in the journals Quick Brown Fox and The Reader. I am also the founder and editor of Poems of Amherst, a community engaged learning project that brings the neighborhood of Amherst, Massachusetts and the art of poetry together. This workshop will increase my chances of getting into the graduate schools I want to attend, since it's a well-known workshop throughout the creative writing world. Next year I plan to apply to the Iowa Writers Workshop, Stanford, UPenn, Yale, and a few state schools for an MFA in Poetry.
The Tin House workshop is extremely competitive and the fact that I received acceptance already puts a smile on my face. But the only thing stopping me from attending is the financials. The deposit is $800, tuition"”$1100, room & board"”$600, and a round-trip flight from the east coast to Portland, Oregon costs about $500. I know this is a lot to ask but any donation will put me that much closer to my professional career as a writer/teacher. So if you find any nickels or quarters lying under the sofa or in the corners of your sock drawer please feel free to donate them to this GoFundMe.
Thank you and if you have any questions about the workshop, the costs, or anything else, please let me know!
Best, Sean Shearer
