Scouts - The Movie

Donation protected
Scouts Honor is John Hobbs incredible true story of overcoming the psychological manipulation and sexual abuse he experienced within the Boy Scouts of America. It’s the story of Troop 42, John Hobbs and Dr. Joseph Mackey, a trusted ScoutMaster and family doctor. John’s bravery is matched only by his commitment to tell his story and help others. Please help us support John by donating and sharing. Every donation goes directly towards the making of this film. For the full story, click the video or read below.

In 1996, the year they met, Dr. Mackey was a 23-year-old pre-med student, heavily involved in the Boy Scouts. John was a trusting 10-year-old child with a blond bowl cut and large trusting eyes.

In the years to come, Dr. Mackey would overprescribe multiple, mind altering psychiatric drugs to the young boy, provide vast amounts of alcohol and go as far as to concoct a fake medical study at KU Med Center in what would be the start of years of sexual abuse. Dr. Mackey was John’s trusted friend and only doctor.

After years of abuse John could take no more and told his story to his wife Megan in 2010, shortly after they were married.

In 2017, after avoiding justice for years, Dr. Mackey plead guilty to one count of Statutory Sodomy and served only four months in jail, in an isolated cell for his protection.

While Joe Mackey walks free today, John is still picking up the pieces of his life. He’s gone through years of costly therapies and is currently on disability and seeking employment.

John’s is a Survivor Story, and is more common than you might think. While his story is framed within the Boy Scouts organization, the true core is the psychological manipulation of him, his family and community, in broad daylight by a trusted friend.

This story is unfortunately all too common and persists to this day in children’s organizations. It may not directly affect you, but it is directly affecting many children across America.

Nearly 8,000 Boy Scouts troop leaders and BSA volunteers allegedly abused more than 12,000 young scouts, according to court documents obtained by ABC News. Sources close to the issue say the real number is closer to 100,000 victims.
The numbers come from the "perversion files," which The New York Times reports began after World War I and continued through 2016.

This could happen to the people you know and love - your nephew, cousin, brother or even son. How would it make you feel if your son or daughter was manipulated by an authority figure in their life? Wouldn’t you want someone to speak out on the issue and to stop it from happening again?

This is why we are making this film and why need your help.

Shortly after John’s case, another Scout abuse victim, Danny Shore, took his own life, and John made the difficult decision to speak out about his story publicly. He wanted to let others know they are not alone and to prevent more abuse.

We, John Hobbs and Dylan Allen, are childhood friends that were in Scout Troop 42 together. We didn’t speak out as children, but we are letting our voices be heard now.

You can learn more about John’s story and follow all of our progress with the film by following the “Scout’s Honor” page on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter under the username @ScoutsHonor2020

Our Team:

John Hobbs - John is a childhood abuse survivor. More importantly, John is a trusted friend, a devoted husband, and a victim’s advocate, working with several non-profits. He also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology and has made helping those who can’t help themselves his life’s work.

Dylan Allen – Dylan was present with John and Dr. Mackey in Troop 42 in Lee’s Summit, MO from 1996-1999. He remembers his Scouting years vividly and is the filmmaker leading the project. Dylan is a Writer/Director/Editor having worked in LA, New Orleans, KC, and Haiti. He is excited to work on “Scout’s Honor” to bring justice and support for those affected. https://www.itsDylanAllen.

We can’t change what happened to John, but we can change the way his story ends. Most importantly, we can help prevent this from happening to more kids in the future by providing an outlet for current/previous Scouts that may be going through something similar.

In this documentary, John tells his unbelievable true story. The movie gives an inside look at the complex psychological components involved in childhood sexual abuse, as well as specifics on how organizations like the Boy Scouts effectively cover it up. In John's case, for decade.

The project features expert interviews with John, his experienced BSA attorney Randall Rhodes, his therapist Cindy Hastert, psychologist Dr. Avery Bratt, and several others. These experts have spent years working with and supporting John in his healing and they have a lot to say about Dr. Mackey, the Scouts and their crimes.

The film also features interviews with many people close to John throughout his life, including his friends, fellow Scouts and most importantly, wife Megan.

Your generous donation goes entirely towards the production and post-production budget for the feature film.

The "Sizzle Reel"  and "Why We're Doing This" videos at the top of the page and the 25 minute short film under the $50 reward section are all pieces we created by ourselves, within our own means. They are tools to share our vision for the project and help take it to the next level of production. While they’re not intended for wider distribution, their purpose is to create a dialogue, get the ball rolling and give support and clarity to the GoFundMe campaign.

We have everything in place to complete the full documentary in a short amount of time. We’ll do this by utilizing the knowledge and passion of the key crew members, experts and subjects of the film.
