Urgent - Please Help Me Save Luna My Therapy Cat

My baby Luna, my sphynx therapy cat (emotional support animal), has been in the emergency veterinary hospital for the past week. She is fighting for her life as she battles a severe case of Pyothorax. Pyothorax is a bacterial infection in the chest cavity. The infection is causing pus and fluids to accumulate in her chest cavity surrounding her lungs and heart. It is making it hard for her to breathe. My parents and I have kept Luna in the hospital so the vets can keep her in an oxygen kennel, place chest tubes to help drain the fluid as much as possible and keep her on a strong course of multiple antibiotics.

Luna is not your ordinary, run of the mill house cat. First, she is my naked bebeyyy:) After my mom and I began fostering and rescuing animals, I found out about Luna who needed to be rescued and nursed back to health 4 years ago. I have always wanted my own sphynx cat, because they are known to be especially loving, form strong bonds with their people and are wildly silly and entertaining. My dad drove me 13 hours in a blizzard (not kidding) one January morning to pick her up and bring her home. We have always known that Luna is a sensitive cat, hence why she ended up as rescue needing extra care, but her health has been great until now.

Luna is more than a pet to me. I feel like Luna and I are soul bonded. I love her, she was meant to be in my life and I’m scared to lose her. She truly is my therapy animal, I love her like she’s my baby. Over the last three years I, too, have been very sick and struggling. I’ve spent many months in and out of hospitals. I have always carried her picture with me and have hung her photos around the walls of any room I was in to keep me going and remind me of who was waiting for me at home. I have spent a total of 15 months in the hospital, residential and programs. I was alone, she wasn’t allowed to visit me there. (I do have one doctor who lets me bring her to appointments!), every time I have come home, Luna has been there with an unconditional love, a warm body like a hot water bottle, incessant face rubs and a purr to help me feel better. I do know that I am on a waiting list for a service dog that will be able to help me and go with me anywhere one day, but Luna really is my love and the best service cat I could ever ask for. She is always extremely happy to see me. She sleeps in my bed with me at night, usually on my neck, and when I am home she never leaves my side.

I have done my best to take care of Luna like she has taken care of me. I cannot imagine my life without her and I am not ready to say goodbye if I can save her with surgery. My mom, dad and I have been talking to the vets and they say she is not suffering or in pain right now. I so badly want to give her the chance to pull through and not let her down because I can't afford the surgery. I have always helped my parents pay for her vet care, even though I’m only 16 years old.

Luna's care has been extremely expensive already, and I know my parents have already had to pay over $7000 for her medical expenses just for the past 6 days. Sadly and despite it looking like she was making big progress, the vet today said unless we can get her life-saving surgery to have a thoracotomy (open her chest and clean out the abscess and infection), we may need to start thinking of putting her to sleep. I cannot stand to think of that, and I know that I could really use a little miracle, or at least some help giving her the very best care to reach the best potential outcome.

The vets have told us that they can do the surgery today or tomorrow and would be able to minimize their costs to be "only" an additional $5,400 - $6,000 depending on her after care. It seems like a lot. It IS a lot. But just like the doctors and my family have done everything for me to get better, I want to be able to do the same for her. I am studying to be a vet tech right now and have even asked the hospital if I can work of the cost of the surgery by helping there, but I have not received an answer though my mom isn't sure that they would accept that kind of offer.

If you would like to help me with a little donation towards Luna's care, hospital and surgery costs, I would be forever grateful.

Please check back here and I will post updates. I am praying that they are all good news.
