Ocean is a broken little pup who is missing her puppyhood!
We rescued this little fur angel at 3 months and she took an unfortunate tumble ~2 months later when we were hiking upstate. One yelp and she had a slight fracture in her growth plate. This injury was unique due to the location of the break and her very young age, with so much growing left to do! Unbeknownst to us, this meant that one bone in her leg would keep growing while the other stopped entirely.
Ocean was originally placed in a cast for 4 weeks and was slowly being transitioned back to her playful self, but we noticed she wasn't healing right and she was still always limping. Often, she would put no weight on this leg at all. We knew this wasn't normal, but still hoped for the best. Our vet reassured us this was part of a normal adjustment period to becoming weight bearing again. We brought her to a new vet for another opinion where she was placed on an anti inflammatory pill and prescribed a sedative to keep calm. Our happy little pup was now lethargic and grumpy. No longer allowed to run free on the doggy beach or play with any other dogs. Our social butterfly was getting bored with us...
Unfortunately the isolation and medication didn't seem to help either. Sadly, after requesting a further evaluation from another radiologist and orthopedic surgeon, corrective surgery became the only remaining recommendation.
Nick and I wanted to take no chances so as per our new vet's recommendation, we headed straight to the best- Cornell University Veterinarian Specialists. We thought we were merely going for a consultation but it was recommended that ocean be admitted for immediate surgery the next morning.
We knew we had to make every decision with Ocean's best interest in mind. We didn't even want to hear the prices while considering each alternative. We understand that at some point, it's best to trust the professionals. That means Ocean is headed for surgery today 12/18/19. She will have a 2 month recovery period ahead of her where she will be crated all day every day and heavily sedated- with weekly trips to CT for bandage changes.
We are just trying to give Ocean the best chance at a normal happy dog life.
As all these vet bills were unexpected, Ocean has now maxed out her insurance coverage, and we have personally invested over $2,000 so far, we are hoping people will find it deep in their hearts to help us care for our little girl. She means the world to us and we're giving her all we've got.
