Legal Case to Save the River Valley

In 1974, Alberta created Edmonton's river valley park system, called Capital City Recreation Park, shortly after MacKinnon Ravine narrowly escaped being turned into a freeway. This park, stated Premier Peter Lougheed, represents "our vision of a good quality of life to be enjoyed by the people of Edmonton and by their children." The river valley was then further supported by Bylaw 7188, which states one of its purposes is to protect the river valley from municipal transportation pressures.
As the bylaw predicted, our river valley is again under pressure from municipal transportation. Edmonton is planning to run the Valley Line LRT through a tranquil area, replacing the only non-vehicle crossing in the central river valley. This makes no sense; we need to recognize this takes us further from our goals of sustainability and livability. We need public transit to replace cars, not parks and pedestrian corridors.
Save the Footbridge recently learned that the City did not consult with their partner, the Province, when planning the Valley Line through the Park. This was a requirement of the Park agreement. As a result, a member of our group has filed an injunction requesting a halt on the Valley Line LRT between the Quarters and Muttart stops.
This injunction represents an opportunity for the city, the province, and TransEd to work together to preserve our river valley and still improve public transit options. Alternatives include crossing the river at the Low Level Bridge, thereby making use of an existing vehicle corridor and serving the Shaw Conference Centre, or switching to Bus Rapid Transit, which could run on existing roadways; for $1.8 billion, we could have an excellent system with heated shelters and money for feeder buses to conveniently get people to the line.
The money raised by this campaign will pay for legal costs. We have a court date of August 16, 2016, at 8:30 a.m.
Please help fund this important case. There is so much at stake, there is still time to undertake a change, and we can do so much better. This is a major opportunity to improve Edmonton's public transit system, and do our part—for it is our turn—to protect our beautiful river valley.
