ON THE LONG ROAD TO RECOVERY

In a not-at-fault accident in Bolivia, South America, Mark escaped a serious accident that almost took his life.

Mark suffered a complex exposed fracture of his left forearm, requiring two titanium plates and pins. His right leg suffered a major fracture below the knee, that required a bone implant, and a large titanium plate that extends the length of his his lower leg.

Of greatest concern is a brachial plexus injury/paralysis (nerve damage), that needed urgent specialist attention not available in Bolivia.

Mark's Bolivian Insurance provider only covered 70% of two extensive surgeries, and does not cover repatriation for the necessary assessment by a neurosurgeon.  The extensive medical costs not covered by his insurance provider, have exhausted Mark’s finances.

We have brought Mark HOME where he went through multiple long surgerires.

His right leg has healed very well and feels better than it did before the accident.

His left arm and wrist went through a major reconstruction and now feels great with 90% strength and movement.

His right arm, with nerve damage, has undergone a major re-wire, a total 36hrs of surgery by two surgeons over two operations.

The surgeons are very happy with the results and can measure the signals are now getting through to the muscles. It's only about 2% but is very promising as he can feel the muscles trying to respond.

Still a long road a head but at least the worst of it all is behind him. It is expected that the elbow will recover some function between 6 to 12 months - a further 2 to 3 years for the shoulder to have 60% of function and strength.

Mark is a determined chartacter his sheer determination he will blow these estimates out of the water!

With the Surgeons and Physiotherapy teams consent Marks has returned to his home in La Paz  where we have found a physiotherapist who was trained in the UK who can tag with the PT team at the Alfred Hospital. His day to day living expenses are far less in La Paz than they are here in Australia.

Words alone can not express the magnitude of our thankfulness and gratitude! Without the huge support from those around Mark, the many more who have helped in so many ways, without which the outcome would be completely different, and certainly not positive.

There is still along road ahead, his mindset and sheer determination will ensure success.

He still requires long term physio and medikcations the right arm will continue to be an issue or some years ahead.

We kindly ask you to please share this “GoFundMe” page on your Facebook page and Twitter as we are still some $6,000 short of our goal. There are ongoing medications and theropies and medical treatment, out patient care, day to day expenses, etc..

Mark's paralasys of his right arm limits his capacity to take on meaningful employment.
