Help Save Fishermen and Whales!!

On June 11, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council made the unanimous and landmark decision to support our work to save whales, AND fishermen by recommending our Exempted Fishing Permit be approved by NOAA to allow us to test "ropeless" fishing gear in Georgia's bountiful coastal waters. This vote supports work to preserve both the coastal communities in this area, as well as the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale.

The North Atlantic right whale species is declining due to two primary causes, ship strikes and entanglement in fishing gear, primarily vertical ropes and buoys. These vertical lines can be found in every location right whales migrate, including off the coast of Georgia where the Black Sea Bass pot fishery largely contributes to the local economy.  Black Sea Bass fishermen want to save the whales but ALSO feed their families while contributing to their local economy, and have stepped up to work on a solution to this dire problem by working to get vertical ropes out of the water and using ropeless gear systems, drastically reducing right whale entanglements.

For the last two years, we have been working diligently to deploy ropeless gear systems in Georgia that remove risks to right whales while helping the fishing industry thrive. We still have much progress to make and need your help to continue our work this fall.

We are a fully-fisher (and self)-funded small group of scientists working hard to make sure fishermen can coexist with their friends in the ocean and need your help.

Thank you so much for caring!

Please help fund our research that will save a species through cooperation and commitment. Together, we can save the livelihood of the fishing industry and North Atlantic right whales.
