In memory of Ali, the cancer teen who took on BP

Ali Hussein Julood lives in Iraq, next to one of the biggest and most polluted oil fields in the world, run by BP. When he was 15 he was diagnosed with leukaemia.

Ali’s neighbourhood is completely surrounded by thick black smoke from gas flaring, a totally avoidable and toxic practice by BP and the oil industry in Iraq. These flares emit carcinogenic gases including benzene, which is known to cause leukaemia.

Ali bravely spoke out for his community as part of Under Poisoned Skies, an award-winning BBC documentary.

At the time of the BBC film, Ali had recovered from cancer, after a bone marrow transplant in Turkey. But he recently found out his cancer has returned.

Iraq doesn’t have the healthcare facilities Ali needs to survive so we are raising money to get him to a hospital abroad. He has been offered life-saving treatment in India, but the medical bills are expensive.

Ali's town is closed off to journalists, so he made video diaries to help reveal the damage that big oil companies like BP are doing to people’s health with air pollution.

We would very much appreciate your help to try to save the life of this incredibly courageous young man, who put everything on the line to speak up for his community and put a spotlight on injustice that has so far been overlooked.

This fundraiser is being hosted on behalf of Ali's family by Callum Grieve, and every penny will go towards Ali's medical treatment and living expenses while receiving the treatment.
