I started training in MMA 11 years ago, in Chilliwack BC. After 3 years of training and 2 amateur fights, I got offered an amazing opportunity. Rosi Sexton (at the time was ranked #1 in the world at the 125lb weight class) was looking for a training partner. I messaged her as soon as I found out. I figured there must be a ton of people that would want to learn from the best, but she talked to me, and a month later I was in Manchester, England with Rosi picking me up from the airport! I learned so much while I was there, and I had my last amateur fight and my first professional fight while I was there. After a year in England I had a gut feeling to come back to Canada, and I knew that Toshido MMA would be my new home. For 2 months I drove from Chilliwack to Kelowna (3 hours each way) a few times a week to train at Toshido, before I was able to make the move up to Kelowna. From there my skills kept improving at a rapid rate, and I took a short notice fight against Julianna Pena with a doctor stoppage win. I then got invited to fight in Invicta FC, the largest all women's fight organization in the world. Within a year of that fight, UFC finally decided to open up a womens division, in my weight class, and they were holding tryouts for The Ultimate Fighter, the TV show. I made it to the semi finals on the show fighting back to back 3 times within a 6 week period, and beating Tara LaRosa (who was ranked #1 in the world at 135lb when I started training) to make it into the Ultimate Fighter house. Since then I’ve had 2 UFC fights and I have just signed the contract for my third. It has been a while since I’ve had the opportunity to fight in Canada, and now I get to fight on UFC 215 in Edmonton September 9!
I want to compete and be the best fighter I can be and I can’t do it alone. In order to do that I need to be able to train full-time without work a second job to pay my living expenses (rent, phone, food, and nutritional supplements). I also want to be able to make sure that my body is in the best shape and condition it can be in, and therefore I will need to pay for strength and conditioning, and forms of recovery and rehabilitation for minor injuries that occur during a fight camp.
The UFC also invited me to a UFC Athletic Retreat, that was on May long weekend in Las Vegas, where they opened up a brand new (NFL level) Performance Institute for us UFC fighters. At the Institute, I can go any time and receive free physiotherapy, and have a strength and conditioning coach work with me on my specific needs. They even have a nutritionist and a buffet that works with the nutrition plan all for free, all I need to do is pay for my flight, hotel and transportation. So I want to take full advantage of the facility. They have technology that will help me that I didn’t even know existed.
